Refret Q'$ on a Guild

I have a Guild D30 Maple I am (was) planning to have re-fretted etc.
The re-fret, bone saddle and nut +tax is gonna run almost $600
$360 frets, $80 bone saddle, $80
Its looking like the work will be worth maybe what the guitar is used. So many guitars to choose from though.

I've had it since 1990 and liked it till a few of the frets quit working a yr or so ago. It's got a couple character dings on the top as well.

I had it evaluated and It has been at the shop for a couple weeks - they won't get started on it till the end of may. The wait has me ponderin.

The guys at the store where I bought a replacement guitar (Breedlove -I likethe G more) offered me $150 for the D30.

What would you do?

- get the re-fret sell the Breedlove
- sell the Guild as is for $?
- Dont fix the G, get rid of both and get something different/better.
- ?

Oh and a C.Fiber is in my future at some point. I'm just warming up to spending more $ than I'm used to for something goooood. $2k is prob. the upper limit.

I own a pair of D30's. No way I'd sell either for short money.

You may be able to get a partial refret. Just replace the first 5 frets. Those are usually the ones that wear out first.

What exactly is a C Fiber?

What guitar can you buy for $600.00 that will sound like your Guild?
Get the work done and enjoy your guitar for another 20 to 20 years.

Those prices for repair seem awful steep to me. I can get first 5 refretted on bound neck for $150. Bone blanks are only like $15. Pre-slotted maybe $25. I'd find another shop. My 2c. Don't mean to offend.

And the $150 offer on a $700+ guitar is insultingly low.

$600.00 for just the refret sounds a bit high to me. Shop around.

To the guys saying the refret quote is a bit steep.

Your right it is but in some circumstances when there is only one guy around, that is how it is.

I understand the OP concern but still this is what I would try to do.

I would get a crowning file from a place like Stewart Macdonald and watch some videos on dressing frets and go for it myself and see how far down the road you could kick the can for a while. You might be surprised.

The re-fret is $360 The other stuff is nut / saddle / strings / tax (10%) to the tune of $582

This is at Dusty Strings in Seattle. Pretty much all they do is Acoustic.

I briefly thought of trying it but I'd rather it be done right the first time -

crossing my fingers.

If you look around you should be able to find a almost new Emerald X20’s in the $1400-1500 range. They sell fast and are really good guitars!

Used mid-90s Westerly D30BL's routinely sell for just under a grand. If you get the refret and saddle & nut, you'll have a 30-year-old classic that plays like new for $550. I wouldn't pass that up.

I think that I paid about the same for the refret job on my 1979 Guild F512 a few years ago. It is a well known shop here in Portland OR....(Portland Fretworks)..plus had new nut made for it. It plays like a new guitar now.. with low action i can say that it plays as easy as my Taylor jumbo 12 string. So for me it was worth the money because of the condition of the guitar.. for its age.

I’d try to do the saddle myself and have someone else do the first few frets. Ain’t no way I’d sell it for $150.......

I have a Guild D30 and it is one of my best strumming guitars. It would be one of the last that I would sell. They are becoming harder to find and there are usually very few for sale at any point in time. A D30, of your vintage, in reasonably good condition with new frets, bone saddle and nut would probably be worth $1,000.00, or more. Being in the Seattle area, there must be many luthiers who could do the work for less than $600.00. I'd recommend getting it fixed and keeping it.

There is a GOOD repair place for Guilds , that the folks in the Let'sTalkGuild forum know. I just used him to fix a rare Ovation. Unfortunately, he's in Florida. It cost me some cash to ship it from California. But it did do a very nice job. I can send you his URL and Phone# and he could give you a ball park price for the work. At least you could use that as a yard stick.
