Default Million-dollar Strads fall to modern violins in blind 'sound check'

Although the article is about wood instruments, maybe there are insights found in this article that could apply to composite guitars as well--at least someday.

https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2017...nd-sound-check

There is no single guitar that qualifies as the "Stradivarius" of guitars (not counting the few guitars Stradivarius actually made). I suppose because we expect more differences in types of guitar sound in the guitar world any analogies from the article we try to apply will fail.

Maybe the only solid point of the article is the reminder that price is not the only measure of an instruments worth.

The violin world seems to me to have more of a single ideal in mind for what is perfection in sound--because of Stradivarius. I've never heard of anyone scorning the sound of any Stradivarius.

But this is just my limited understanding as I know little about violins or the violin community. Maybe a violin player will bring better insight.

I wonder how violin traditionalists consider the carbon fiber variety. I think CF cellos are well-regarded, at least if Yo Yo MA's use of them is any indication.

Haha, seems that way. Slow and steady since '02...similar to my guitar playing since '76.

I am not surprised that Strads don't always win a blind sound check. I wouldn't be surprised if they lost to a CF violin too. I came extremely close to getting a Luis and Clark violin (they made the cello Yo-Yo Ma plays) a few years ago but ended up getting a newborn instead (It's all about timing). They are phenomenal instruments and blow my 19th Century violin out of the water. I don't have enough time to play violin enough to be proficient or more importantly warrant a 5 grand violin anymore, but through salivating over Luis and Clark violins I did discover composite instruments which lead circuitously (as Oasis said, "all the roads we have to walk along are winding") to why I now have an X20 and a Lucky 13.

Hi ac & everyone,

On the discussion of carbon fibre violins, we thought it would be a nice opportunity to give the AGF members an exclusive first look at the Phoenix!

We have yet to fully publicise this instrument ourselves, but the gold-leafed six-string electric violin custom-made by Alistair was first unveiled by its new owner Dennis Lau in concert in Kuala Lumpur last October.

No doubt, Alistair will be delighted to fill you in more on the exciting story behind this beautiful instrument himself, but in the meantime, here are some photos. We'd be delighted to hear your thoughts.

Kind regards from all the Emerald team,

Sean

Is that gold leaf all over or gold enamel?

HOW does the player hold it?? Where does his chin go? Or maybe he has another style of play?

I'm assuming it's a him, btw.

It's amazing. I'd never imagined a violin could look like that. I'm curious what type of music the player plays also.

Congratulations!

Just like Steve Vai's Emerald "Ultra" guitar, this violin takes form and function to another level. Alistair (and perhaps some of his clientele) has a wild imagination and it's wonderful that he can experiment and turn into reality. Personally, this and Vai's instruments are not at all to my taste, but I appreciate the art of it. His stretching the limits is what allows us to enjoy his take on more conventional and unconventional guitars.

It's more like "wear it" than "hold it".

Wow, that's a rather fantastic looking instrument. I'd love to hear it played.

Dang, who knew fiddle music was popular in the Klingon Empire.
