The first album that came to mind was Jackson Browne's For Everyman...
1. Take It Easy...melding seamlessly into the superb... 2. Our Lady of the Well...but kinda changing feel going into... 3. Colors of the Sun...good, but not JB's most memorable Then I remembered my fave from my days in Austin (early '70s) Frummox Here to There. Side 1 starts out strong... 1. Man with the Big Hat, followed by the equally iconic ballad 2. Kansas Legend, but let down just a tad by #3 3. Song for Stephen Stills...OK, but not Steven Fromholz's best OTOH, Side 2 is self-proving greatness, because cuts 1-3 are the classic Texas Trilogy... 1. Daybreak 2. Trainride 3. Bosque County Romance I'm pretty sure the Trilogy is what convinced folks down here to name Fromholz the Poet Laureate of Texas (seriously). If I can add my (less than acoustic) Rolling Stones choice, it would be Let It Bleed. 1. Gimme Shelter 2. Love in Vain 3. Country Honk (personal fave version of Honky Tonk Women) Gotta stop or I'll list a dozen more... Dirk

For me, it was probably Live Dead, with Dark Star, St. Stephen, The Eleven. Or maybe Tom Petty's **** the Torpedos, with Refugee, Here Comes My Girl, and Even The Losers.
But overall, even though I'm not all that much of a Beatles guy (I was always WAAAAY more into the Stones!), it's really hard to beat Sgt. Pepper's. Jeez, Sgt. Pepper's, With a Little Help From My Friends, and Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds is a pretty tough first three to beat. Maybe not MY favorite, but on the list of great albums with great openers, that's really pretty much gotta be the one... -Ray

The first three dozen entries are like jumping in a time machine: almost all are albums that i owned and loved, and that were in heavy rotation for a while.
Great thread! |
