It would be awesome if we could extinguish the incredibly frequent misuse of the word. I mean, it would be literally awesome.

It isn't a word I use...so I'm doing my part. But how do we deal with the millions (again, literally...I word that I use when I mean "literally") who are either ignorant or careless or imprecise?

i'm good with using "groovy", or some other word that is clearly a colloquialism, like:
A-OK, A1, bang-up, boffo, , boss, cool, corking, crackerjack, cracking, dandy, dynamite, fab, , fantabulous, gangbusters, jim-dandy, keen, neat, nifty, numero uno, out-of-sight peachy, peachy keen, swell.

"Groovy" is fine. Anything is better than "awesome". And word usage can be cyclical.

Just don't get me started on "most unique" or "it's all good".

A couple of common uses of Awesome! that stuck with me.

I went to my Doctor for a consult and when we were done the conversation went something like:

Doc: "Could you close the door on your way out?"
Me: "Sure."
Doc: "Awesome."

A typical waitress: "Are you ready to order?"
Me: "Yes."
Waitress: "Awesome."

I think "Groovy" would have been an appropriate response.

Thread drift prompted by oldwasichu's post: A conversation between Bill Cosby and John Denver on guest hosting the Tonight Show:

Cosby: "What stood out when you watched the playback of the show?"
Denver" "I said, 'Far out,' 27 times."

Agreed, it is used too much. My pet peeves are "classic", when referred to a 12 month old song and "iconic", which is misused in too many situations to count.

While on the subject, if you were a teenager in the 80s, the media was full of over-used terms - who can forget FZ's wonderful 'Valley Girl':

This thread is bringing back memories of my dad before he passed away.

In his last years, my dad was confined to a wheelchair (after being hit by a car while riding his bicycle in his mid 70's). This led to a big amount of his time watching TV.

At one point, he started a tirade against the widespread use of the word "basically", which rubbed him the wrong way as he felt it was a "BS" word that was a useless construct that people used to make them appear more intelligent than they were.

His crusade against the use of "basically" reached the point where he rigged a wireless doorbell button and chime to his wheelchair.

When anyone used the word "basically" in conversation (either in his presence or on TV), he'd press the doorbell button to produce a "bing bong" sound to show people how they themselves overused the word.

(Note that this was years before the "Hector 'Tio' Salamanca" character on 'Breaking Bad').

If he was out of his wheelchair or couldn't get to the button in time, he'd simply exclaim "BING BONG" to make his point.

At family gatherings, some of will occasionally say "Bing Bong" if someone states the word "basically" in conversation.

Flashback to about 1999 when I was teaching a Kindergarten music class and being observed by the principal.

The song we were doing was The Watermelon Song.

You can plant a watermelon up above my grave
And let the juice "Slurp" slip through.
You can plant a watermelon up above my grave
That's all I ask of you.
Well chocolate chip cookies; they taste mighty fine,
But nothin's quite as sweet as the watermelon vine
You can plant a watermelon up above my grave
And let the juice "Slurp" slip through.

When we learned the song, I told them something like, "We have a visitor and there's something we can do to impress her. Every time we sing "juice", I will point my finger and when it comes to you, make your biggest, sloppiest slurp and as my finger moves, the slurp will travel across the room in stereophonic sound. It'll be totally awesome." It was.

In her critique of my lesson, she said, "Jim, I don't think these kids have a clue what "stereophonic sound" is and . . .'Totally awesome?' Really Jim."
I said, "But it was, wasn't it?"
She admitted that it was.

I watch a lot of British shows on Netflix and Prime. I've taken to throwing "cracking" and "smashing" around a lot. My wife tells me to quit and my friends think I'm weird. How about "biching"? My wife put an end to that one right away.

Might I suggest we include the word "Perfect?"

I'm thinking that it's been so long since Strunk and White was the preferred stylebook of American usage that we can disobey White's edict. If I say that something is "flammable," the average person knows it'll go up in smoke.

If I use the word "inflammable," at least of few folk will apply the rule than "in" means "not."
