My "thing" is rectangular faces, and chronographs, which is a bit daft as my eyes are failing (like many other bits and pieces) and I can't see the tint chrono faces now.

Geek? Yes! Watch geek, nope but I did purchase a Casio Pro Trek PRW 2500 as I like to hike. So, I picked it up for $250.00 but when the pandemic hit and everyone stayed home and became avid hikers it is now $350!! Cool watch though,

I've been at it for a while. It all started in 1984 with a Datejust that was my only watch for 20 years. Wore it 24/7 for all manner of outdoor sports, and while I was at work as a Firefighter. Then I decided to give it an easier life and bought a CWC G10 for work, that's when I was bitten by the bug.

I have a baker's dozen or so watches, none of them terribly expensive. My Orient Air Diver probably gets the most wrist time. But I do really like my Maranez Layan brass with a moss agate face too.

I really only have one watch, but it has multiple bands. In addition to the hand-made Horween leather band pictured earlier in the thread, here’s my Vaer C5 wearing the quick release silicone band. I call it the “Adventure Band” because I like to use it for adventures (basically any activity that involves stepping outside my house).
Next I’d like to add a nylon NATO style band.

For a long time I had a rotation of Seikos, Tommy Bahamas, Pulsars and such. This was probably 10 years ago. They were kind of occasion watches.
My wife bought me a very nice Tag Aquaracer for our anniversary 7 years ago. It’’s pretty much the only watch I wear anymore though on occasion I’ll break out a cheap Casio for the beach or boating. I also have a cool looking newer Chrono by a company called AV-8. Kind of retro. I had it in my head that I wanted a Rolex so I borrowed my sons for a few weeks. Great looking watch indeed. Kept time like nobody’s business. I gave it back to him and he asked what I thought. Told him it was awesome and absolutely no one cared that I had this expensive watch on. Got me over my need for a Rolex. Now an Omega Chrono....hmmmm.

The micro brand quartz field watch I got for Christmas didn’t keep good time, so I sent it back and bought something more suitable. Citizen Promaster Diver Ecodrive.
The battery charges from any light source and will run for 6 months when fully charged. And it keeps perfect time, no matter what kind of abuse I put it through. It should be perfect for me, but while shopping for this watch, I “unfortunately” learned about Tudor, Oris. Doxa, Omega, and a few others. Now that door is open so I’ll have to see where it leads.

A question for you watch geeks:
How do deal with the inherent inaccuracy (+/- a few seconds a day) of automatic watches? I’ve always had a quartz watch, so I’m used to the time being accurate. I’d really love to explore the world of automatic timepieces but I’m afraid that spendings a large sum of $$ on a watch that wasn’t completely accurate would drive me crazy.

I bought my first luxury watch at the age of 24; a Rolex Date-Just. I paid $1,100 for it at a mall jewelry store in South Carolina. I wish I still had it. It sells for about $6,000 today.
Some of the current stable: Brielting Colt 43 Oris Williams F1 Omega Seamaster Coax (black no-wave dial/ceramic) 18K Hamilton (high school graduation gift to my Dad in 1950, his initials engraved on back) Tissot T-Touch Rolex Red Submariner Zeno Watch Basel (not sure of the model; literally won it in a poker game) Deep Blue Sun Diver II Deep Blue Sun Diver III All told, I probably have about 20 watches, although some of them are either too small or too special (my grandfather's Fortis and Dad's Hamilton) that I never wear them. My "Top 3" rotation would be the Breitling, the Omega and the Oris. The Deep Blue watches are actually pretty nice for the price. They're great "tool" watches; a few hundred bucks, automatic, tough as nails... |
