John Mayer and his naturally relic'd Martin
I admit I have a soft spot for Mr. Mayer. I saw him before his first album and single were released, in a small venue called The Largo, when it was in its original location on Fairfax Ave.
He maybe played a half dozen songs opening up for one of my favorite artists Glen Phillips. He was shy, not much stage presence, focused solely on his music and performance. A far cry from the uber-confident pop act he would become in a few short months. Here's his NAMM 21 virtual performance, uploaded yesterday, and a nice reminder that the man can really play our favorite "wooden box with strings" instrument. Loved the incredibly workman-like moment he has in Dear Marie where he switches from fingerstyle to pick, just reaches down to where it was laying on his thigh, a slight gap in the music. It's a move we all have done, it's just great to see human moments like that from the professionals.

I bought his Heavier Things album almost 20 years ago but just couldn't seem to get into the guy. No doubt a monster player though, proving himself to me when he was introduced at the Crossroads Festival by Slowhand.
