Mark, are those type of fret markers going through binding going to be a problem when servicing the fretboard in the future (re-frets)?

Will be curious to see Mark’s response, but (a) I think a refret is so far down the road that it’s not likely to be in my lifetime; and (b) I don’t think the fret markers would interfere in any case as they will be between the frets.

This guitar is shaping up so nicely - lots of unique touches, and superb craftsmanship!

No, they will not present any issues on a re-fret. I had to think about why you would ask that question. I use semi-hemispherical finished fret ends and the fret ends are finished before they are installed. I assume you are thinking of a scenario where the tech doing a re-fret and doing bevels on the fret ends. In this case it is common practice to install them proud then cut them with a flush cutter. From there they would typically run up and down the edge with a file to create the bevel. If the tech was heavy handed he might cut into the edge of the binding and I think your concern is would that silver in the binding be a problem? No. The silver is not as, but about as hard as the fret wire so the file would cut the silver flush with the rest of the damage our heavy handed tech is doing. It would then buff out while he was cleaning up the fret ends.
So that’s my answer to what I assume you are asking. If I assumed wrong I’ll be happy to try again on a different question.

Thanks for commenting,
Mark

Here is a picture of a test one where I am using the same materials (less the binding) to be sure this will work as I am also testing how I am going to do it:

Note that the silver has sanding marks that will be polished out when I do the real ones.

Thanks for following along!

I'm assuming the markers will get narrower as you go up the neck? Might be a bit overwhelming otherwise. I think this is very handsome, and I love that the side markers will be highly visible. I have at least one guitar where overly small side markers present a problem for me.

That fret marker is a lot smaller than it appears in that picture. That piece of Cocobolo it’s mounted in is only about 1 1/4” wide. The marker is 3/4” long and 1/4” wide. It looks good going on up to the 12th fret. It will likely get a bit thinner after that.

Default Josie All Hog

I just got a selfie from one of my guitars that's on vacation:

Haven't seen her in awhile. She seems to be getting a nice tan!

Default Fret Markers Installed

I installed the Koa and silver fret markers today. After finishing this up I decided that this is a practice run.
I learned a lot about the process and sometimes when you envision what you would do differently the best decision is to just go ahead and do it differently!

It says a lot about a luthier that isn't willing to compromise on his/her quality standards! I think the new fret board is going to be even more stunning than the last!

The look of this gorgeous instrument gives the adjective "woody" a whole new meaning!!!
Hopefully we'll get to hear what it sounds like soon?

Default This 2nd iteratiation..

..tops the 1st one me thinks, and the 1st one was very nice already.. but both the structure of the wood and the design and placement of the fretmarkers take it to another level. Wowza !
Man.. I‘d like to touch this fretboard !

....ts.. iteration ... of course.

Thanks Trevor B Koa and Cocobolo are a great combination. The Cocobolo brings the red out in the Koa and the Koa brings the gold out in the Cocobolo.

I agree Lonzo, it was worth the effort.

Default Piña Parlor Curly Redwood on Cocobolo

Putting the finish on these figured woods will be like a match that lights this parlor on fire.
