Godin is using a similar model (made by ?) on their guitars.
I had to change them on my 5th Avenue and recently on my Seagull. They had got harder to turn, then one just gave. I saw the one that gave : the inner gear is made of brass, the dents became thin and their end tended to curl which explain why it failed. It appears to me that the sealed box still contained enough grease though. So just poor cogwheel quality : Brass is surely easier to work than real steel.

No issue with the stock Grovers on my 1998 Taylor. I replaced the buttons with new ones, same style, simply due to wear. Other than that, they perform fine.
