Default Should I change the way I’ve been holding a pick?

I’ve been holding a pic the way you see in the first photo my whole playing life, but I think I need to change it. The way you see in the second photo is the more recommended way. My current way has my index finger curled up and not pointing down the puck towards the tip, the way everyone recommends. Also my hand is in a fist and my fingers aren’t relaxed. I feel like this method is causing my strumming to feel tight and also I seem to attack the strings on the side of the pick and not the point. I know it will take a while for the new way to feel comfortable but do you think I will be better off in the long run?

Still not showing, although the space where they should be is a lot bigger now.

Pictures aren't showing, but concerning a closed fist picking hand, yes, that's the recommended style. I'm going to point you to a Molly Tuttle video where she talks a little about her technique. It's classic closed fist flatpicking style. Notice her hand is not clenched, so her fingers are relaxed.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=awFeDMNiKX4

Me, myself, I don't quite do this (and I'm nowhere even close to Molly Tuttle's class, not in the same zip code, not even on the same planet ) I use the grip on the pick exactly like Molly's in the thumb and forefinger but extend the other three fingers out, and anchor with my pinky when I need one. It works for me, not that I recommending it. Only point is, we can do flatpicking all kinds of ways.

No pics to see, but if there's tension in your hand, that's not good.

I'm actually in the process of changing--very slightly--how I hold the pick...after 28 years of playing. It's not been easy...the issue right now is that I cannot play as fast as I used to, so it's frustrating not to be able to do things I could 6 months ago...but then, I can also feel that I'm more relaxed, and that in time, I will be able to play much faster than before, with little to no fatigue...it's the waiting and practice part that's frustrating!

There is no single correct way to hold a pick. What are you trying to accomplish? What style(s) are you trying to play.

Examples:
Neil Young
Molly Tuttle
Dave Matthews
Tommy E. (yes, he uses a flat pick sometimes)

All flatpick differently.

People use various hosting sites. However, I don't need any photos. If you are having difficulty with your pick and/or picking hand, you need to make changes. If you are not having issues, continue on as is.

Tons of people on forums use postimage.org.

I use sites.google.com/classic, it is for making web pages, which includes
images. I don't put anything but images there. I like how it is possible to
arrange things in logical groups, you can click on this to see what I
mean:

https://sites.google.com/site/hubcapsite9/

Most URLs look like gobbledy-gook, I like URLs that make sense. With google
sites (classic) the first part of the URL is boilerplate and the rest you get
to specify:

Can’t see the pics either but this is how I hold my pick. Fingers are partially open but I can easily close them without tensing my hand.

I sure wish people would use this; it took about 30 seconds, and would avoid all these threads where there is more conversation about posting pics than abut the OP.

I use IMGUR with no issues. And I hold my pick in a unique way, using my thumb and middle finger, not the index finger. The index and ring fingers are on either side and can help to increase or decrease volume and tension. I've thought about changing, but it's become a part of my playing style.
