Quote:
I am not sure how much of what we see is Pernambuco tinting of the Myrtle or the tinting combined with the wood’s reaction to the ammonia penetrant? Bruce did some tests before we decided to go forward. He first tried straight Ammonia to see how it reacted and they was not an immediate color change and there was not too much observed. So he then tried two alternative approaches: 1) He prepared a water based Pernambuco stain and 2) He prepared an ammonia based Pernambuco stain. We went with the later approach in that the color appear richer, chatoyant with higher contrast in the wood’s figure. What I am uncertain of is whether the Myrtle has continued to darken over the one month oil varnish polymerization/hardening time. It looks darker to me. Some woods can react to ammonia much more slowly than Oak. While Oaks react rapidly to ammonia exposure, other woods can darken with a slower and chemically different reactions. With Oak, the primary chemical reaction is with the tannins in the wood. In other woods, a slower reaction in the carbonyl groups of hemicellulose can occur. I know this can occur in some Maples and Larch for example. Here is a paper on this if you’re interested. https://bioresources.cnr.ncsu.edu/re...mmonia-fuming/ The color we see may just be a visual artifact of the incandescent lighting in Bruce’s shop or a continued darkening based upon slower chemical reactions occurring in the Myrtle (tbd). When Bruce is done, I am certain that he’ll take some photos outside in the sunshine. We can compare those to the shots he took a month ago to see if their was continued darkening or the color of the Myrtle of a photographic artifact of shooting the guitar under incandescent lighting (tbd).

Bruce has installed Schaller GrandTune single gear units with rosewood buttons. A Cocobolo headplate veneer and bird’s beak bridle joint can be seen in the the photos.
