I played a mahogany-top Taylor once. It sounded like a real guitar.

The Cedar/EIR GS7 was my favorite Taylor. You won't notice the 13's with that Taylor setup. I'd like to have my old one back!

Taylor knows what to do with mahogany, that's for sure.

Taylor's GA7 are gems, sonic goldmines!
Forget about the oft-repeated silliness about cedar's "low headroom," or "fingerstyle" guitar, or "can't handle strumming": garbage wives tales, all of it. Seriously. I had gigged my GA7 as an avid strummer and hybrid picker for many years long ago. No issues whatsoever, and always sounded great, better than much of Taylor's line. The cedar really pushed the mids forward and gave the guitar a vocal "presence" that few sitka topped guits can, and the RW b/s added a solid, tight bottom that paired perfectly with the cedar. It's a winner that I loved and played a lot! I sold it only to fund another "special" guit, so it was not for anything lacking, to be sure. Edward |

My favorite Taylor models have cedar or mahogany tops… I love the warmth, and how a tad of the zing settles down with the rest of the class.
I suppose if one plays predominantly finger style, I’d look cedar/rosewood or walnut. And if a strummer… hog top.

My 514 is my favorite e or non-e and I’ve owned quite a few Taylors.

Quite a few years ago now (maybe 2006/7) I bought a GS8 (rosewood/spruce) from Guitar Guitar in Newcastle in the north east of England. It was my first high/er end guitar (well over £1,000 at any rate) and I absolutely loved it. No electronics, no cutaway - just wood, frets and strings.
I recall trying out a couple of GSs - I was taken with the looks of the GS6 (maple/spruce) but as I recall it was a little brash for my liking by comparison with the smoother, more refined GS8. It sounded better, richer, deeper and more complex than anything I'd owned up to that point, and I hung on to it for a few years. I seem to remember the neck being very narrow, and I think that would bother me more now than it did back then, but it was a joy to play. I have to say I look at Taylor's model range nowadays and my brain just freezes over - happier, simpler times back then Angus

Non-E Taylor’s, what’s your favorite?
Currently have a 712 12 fret … really nice instrument, no electronics, no cutaway. Had a 322 12 fret (Blackwood) that was incredible. Sales regret.
