Do you save used strings?
The .011 - .052 strings on one of my guitars seem wrong to me after 15 hours of play, so I'm gonna try a set of .012 - .054s. And coil up and save the 11s for future use. I can afford to throw the old ones out, but...
Anybody else save used strings? Is this weird? |

I save them up and recycle them to D'addario.

In a way.
Whole sets of used strings? No, but I occasionally re-use/re-purpose strings (to name a few ways) to suspend bird-feeders (cages of suet in trees), porch wind chimes, etc. |

I change strings because the old ones are done. I have no further use for duff strings, they go straight in the garbage.

I save my bass strings. Haven't broken one in ~50 years. Guitar no.

No, I change them when they are done. Then recycle them at Carter’s when I swing by. Note to self: check if their new digs have that string receptacle. I assume there is a way to reclaim those metals or there would be no recycling box.

I started doing this too, but there is a glitch with my D'addario account so I'm not able to print the shipping labels. I started back when there was a 2 lb minimum to ship (I think they've relaxed that since).
I've got quite a lot of old strings now in my garage - with 25 stringed instruments I go through a lot. Most of my mandolin-family instruments use loop end strings and most of the guitars use ball ends. I was saving the old brass balls in case I needed to replace a single guitar string but only had a loop end in the appropriate gage in my spares. I ran across someone who made jewelry out of old strings. I said "I've got hundreds of old strings; come by anytime and you can have them" but they never did. |

The set I remove is saved and left in the case, marked with the date, and put in the container of the strings I just put on. That way I remember how old the strings I am playing are, what they are, and I have a replacement should one break (which they almost never do). When I change strings again, the original set finally gets trashed.

I send my used strings to a jeweler friend to make things with.

I keep the high e and B strings just in case I break one. I always thought someone must have a creative re-purpose for the rest.

I have a friend who makes jewelry using guitar strings. I put all my old stings in a bag for her.

There are times I may find a weak string as I'm stretching it in.
In this case I open another pack, use the string I need, and store the rest. In this way I end up with a drawer full of NEW singles. No need to save old ones. |
