Whilst, at present, and for the foreseeable future, I haveon ly one Martin - a custom D12-20 12 string, I have the utmost regard for Martin and their superb earlier designs.

As many might know I prefer the pre 1934 12 fret designs, but I must acknowledge that their 1929-34 "change of use" style 14 fret necks were probably the making of them for the future decades.

I started playing in the late '60s and my first US built guitar was a harmony, working up slowly from Gibson, to Epiphone to Guild and then to the acme - the Martin in the early '70s. I found myself trading used Martins - mostly dreads and I didn't even understand the difference between a D18 and a D28 at one time.

In 1975 I finally settled on a spectacular '73 D35 that served me well for twenty odd years.

I now play Collings guitars, because they make the pre 1934 Martin 12 fret designs which Martin have sadly abandoned.

Personally the latest line up of Martins, excepting the standard series: D-18/28/35 etc., and 000/OM (which I can no longer find on their website) has no attraction for me - I just hope that they have done their market research and now what they are doing, especially as the guitar buying public seems (to me) to be looking for pre '34 smaller body designs.

edit : I found the OM designs under 000 and/but they are electros !?

I also found a D45-S with 14 frets - so there is apparently something going wrong in their marketing department.

I got mine for a great price. It was new, but greatly discounted because it had been in the store on display and was used much by prospective buyers, and it had some very minor blemishes.
I love the guitar though, it’s great.

Congratulations! It took me 50 years to get my first Martin, I now have 3 of them. I have a 114ce as well-I like it as well, but I just have this thing about Martins.

Congratulations! I also just bought a brand new 000X1AE at a ridiculously low price after selling my 000CX1AE last year. I needed another I suppose. It just felt right.

I love the durability, looks, and sound of these guitars, so I plan to hang on to this one.

Enjoy your new Martin.

I hope you’re not suggesting he show his Owners Club card! That would be “invasive!” ;-)

FWIW I often feel like my D-16GT isn’t “quite” a “real” Martin and I need to get at least a “Standard Series” model. I will admit thought that an X series planted the seed though so it does have the signature tonal balance.

The real indicator is the scent that wafts out when you open the case. I wish Martin sold a signature potpourri - but that would “cheapen” the experience! XD

If I had a D-18 instead of my D-16GT, I don't know how it would effect my playing. Something tells me I would sound the same,

I do wish my D-16GT had a 1.75" nut though

Should you folks ever want to sell your D-16GTs I think you could find a good price and a good home for it. There are people like me who really are looking for a
1 11/16-inch nut width on a Martin that is not more expensive than we can afford and yet still is a Martin and sounds like a Martin and looks like a Martin and even, as Neil K Walk said, smells like a Martin.
