Default 12 -string joy

I've had an old Ovation 12-string for years and it has lived unstrung in its case for the last five or so. Decided it was time to try to move it on, so I put fresh strings on it, tuned it up and played a few chords. Suddenly it all came back to me, the richness of tone, the projection and the shimmering harp-like quality of a 12-string! Very nice.

Just no real use for it these days.

Not sure why I find this post funny? "I tried my old guitar and it was like angels singing! Oh well, out the door you go!"

Is problem is that is competing with two Lowdens for my attention, and it isn't really up for the challenge. :-)

12 -string joy

I always have a use for a 12 string. And I've always owned a 12 string, almost since I started back in the 60s. Besides playing a lot of Lead Belly material, I also like to play songs just to see how they sound on a 12 string. So while I do 'normal' 12 string numbers like "Walk Right In", I also enjoy doing things like old rock instrumentals such as "Pipeline" and "Walk Don't Run" on a 12 string. And the Searchers did a lot stuff featuring an electric 12. Not to mention Led Zep, so there's a lot of easy inspiration there. So I've tried most of my material on a 12. No, it doesn't always work, but that's how I found doing "Pipeline" on a 12. "Apache" is way better on a 6 string. A lot of folk style tunes sound great on a 12 string too.

I also fingerpick all my instruments using my nails as picks, so I generally use the same arrangements for both 6 and 12 string instruments.

Edit > I used to do a lot of Byrds songs too. I think I just got inspired to pick those up again. "My Back Pages", "Bells of Rhymney", "Tambourine Man". Yeah, that's the ticket.

Every time I've had a 12 string and sold it cuz I didn't use it enough, I wound up buying another one.

Unless you need to use the money for something serious, I'd hang on to it..

I'm more drawn to 12-string guitars than 6-string guitars.
