And I don't play just to listen to what I play, but to record a track. THEN, depending on the DAW, you can modify the sound of the track by adding EQ, reverb, and whatever else the DAW offers.
By amp software, I mean something like:
BlueCat Free Amp
AmpliTube
... and for recording? Hehe, I'm not ready for any production, I'm still practicing and getting skills

Yes, you have a point here, the latency may be an issue and may be essential. I'll see how it performs when I get the my Focusrite Scarlett that I've ordered yesterday

The Scarlett is designed to reduce latency to near nothing. But if, after the scarlett, you're then going into some software for some enhancements and back out again, I guess there could be some lag there....

Another route might be something
Like the helix and their software
Hx edit. Where the control is still
In the computer..but since recording
Isnt your goal.. the potential latency
Is removed from the equation.
But that is certainly a bigger investment than
The small focusrite..
Which is what I use for recording.
You can certainly feed a pa with
The monitor out from that.
I dont think you'll notice the latency
As I dont through my headphones...
