Default Updated Pics: sides & more

Things are well underway as evidenced by the latest photos Stephen has sent me. Here we have the sides bent and neck block shaped:

Sides glued up, neck and tail blocks glued in...

The third frame features support for a sound port (surprises to come on this)

Here's another special feature, custom comfort bevel being shaped...

More neat stuff to come! I can't wait to see it, and can't wait to share it with you

Default Photo Updates More Sides Work

Got a few more photos from Steve today. We're waiting on some primo billets for bracing and tuning the top, so more work was done on the sides (side braces, bevel block, kerfing, soundport reinforcment). Here's an inside look...

Next it was time for Quality Control Inspector "Chet" to give the day's work a once over...

Chet passed the work with a smiling approval!

More good stuff to come

Are you sure it's a "guitar"?

I don't see a cutaway.

All kidding aside, keep the photos coming....

I feel very confident and secure with QC Kitty Chet on the job. Steve assures me nothing slips past him.

Perhaps no money, but there are some good notes up there!

Default bracing the top and bottom

Well, it's time to share some more of what's been happening with my Edwinson EPC. Steve had some new bracing billets ordered that we wanted to wait for before bracing up the back and top, so he worked on a project we had discussed that was going to be a "first" for him and a surprise for me. I'll share a few pics of the braced up back and sides here...

First bracing up the top. Steve does some "different" things with his tops, so I'll let him chime in where necessary and as questions may come up, but a couple things I know... he laminates and strengthens the bridgeplate with carbon fiber and radiuses (sp?) the tops

carbon fiber for bridgeplate lam

pockets for bracing...

gobar'd up

Here are a few shots from the nice clean work that is the back before she gets all closed up:

I'll post a few more in the next post of the box getting closed up...

Thanks Henderson! I'm definitely enjoying the journey and the pictures along the way are like "food for the guitar soul" as the build works its way to completion...

I talked in a couple of previous posts about some surprises and innovative things that Stephen was working on for this particular project. Before we started this build, I sent numerous ideas to Steve, both in verbal form and illustrated form with photoshop mock-ups I had cobbled together. At some point along the way I felt in his and my conversations that he "got me" and the idea I was trying to convey. It was at this juncture that I simply "let go" of the reins and gave full artistic license to Steve. I am so glad that things have worked to this end; the sense of confidence and trust I have with this build and Steve's interpretation of my vision is perfect...even beyond. I eagerly anticipate each new step of the birth of this guitar and can't wait to see what will be done with the finishing touches of the box and then the construction of the neck. What a joy this is!

So, on to the "surprise." We had decided early on there would be a sound port on the guitar. The Edwinson sound ports are all very well constructed and extremely tasteful in their design. At some point in our discussions, I had asked Steve if he had any given any thought to alternate design methods or other creative interpretation to the sound port. I told him I trusted his intuition and he was free to experiment with my guitar. As the build date neared, he shared some fairly innovative plans with me (at least innovative from my limited experience) and the following pics will show the stunning results.

The idea was to go with the standard Edwinson sound port surrounded with a "halo" type burl inlay with plans to sketch in and inlay a stylized cross into the reinforced side.

Here is the stylized cross:

And the special bending pipe the cross was formed around to fit into the curve of the bout...

And the final fit and inlay of the cross

I think it came out awesome and adds another unique element to an already superbly unique and very special instrument. Here are a few more "beauty" shots of the closed up box before it receives it cocobolo binding and purfling.

Steve promises more "neat" things are on the horizon... I can't wait for the next round of results
