Seeking Good, Reliable Repair Person in Orlando Area
Hi Folks,
My nephew, who lives in the Orlando area, has a 1967 Gibson. His father was the original owner and gave the guitar to him. To me it looks like a big slope shoulder dread. Unfortunately I’m not familiar with Gibson acoustic guitars or model names. It lived in Michigan in varying temps and humidities for decades and now is maintained at 50% humidity and 75°F. My nephew is concerned that it might have some cracks and wants to bring it to an experienced and reliable repair person with knowledge of vintage Gibson acoustics. He asked if I could help him find someone. I’d greatly appreciate referrals to a repair person who fits the bill. He loves this guitar, especially given its provenance and its tone. He sent me a photo. I’ve included it for your viewing pleasure. Many thanks! Vivian IMG_2411.jpg |

Hello Vivian,
It is nothing more than finish checking, and needs no further attention. Hopefully he'll accept that as it is and not request that it be refinished. By the way: In 1967 the Southern Jumbo (which I'm assuming is the model given your basic description and the multiple binding) was no longer a slope shoulder. If it actually is a slope shoulder SJ then it's more than likely 1959 or earlier, and FAR more valuable than a square shouldered SJ from the mid 1960's. Regards, Howard Emerson

Hi Howard,
Thanks for your reply. As far as refinishing goes he’d have to go through me first. 😉 |

I’m in eastern MA, just to the west of the Boston line.
I worked at the BI during college. It’s a good place! I’m originally from Philadelphia. I still pronounce “aunt” correctly, as in the industrious insect. |
