Default Gentle on my Mind: Glenn Campbell

Do you play it in D without a capo or use a capo on the second or third fret, and play it in C, but it's still in D or perhaps Eb.

I kind of like to capo it on the second or third fret and strum it in C which allows me a nice hammer on to give the intro a nice country flair.

Just wondered what others here prefer.

Thanks!

I play it using D because what I'm hearing is a D - Dmaj7 - D6 progression in the fingerpicking and that's what the song is based around for me.

Thank you for your responses.

For those of you that fingerpick the chords what pattern do you prefer?

I easily came up with the fingerpicking pattern on my own. Sometimes I make things too complicated or don't have enough confidence in my abilities!

Thanks!

And yeah I think it's better in D or up a half a step with a capo!

I must be going senile. I asked this same question back in 2020. Got a nice video on how Glenn Willow plays it.

Yes, I was thinking of showing you my old video, but now I see it's unnecessary!

It’s a great song. Good luck with it, but it’s written by John Hartford. You should give him credit for it.

Of course, but if you go to my original post I did not say it was written by Glen Campbell. Just said Gentle on my Mind- Glen Campbell. Which could easily mean Glen simply recorded it.

John Hartford not only wrote Gentle on my Mind, which was a big hit for Glen, but it was also wrote two more big hits for Glen: Galveston and By the Time get to Phoenix.

Very nice job! Nice variation on the melody too. Thanks for sharing. That said I prefer it NOT in drop D. But of course that is just my opinion, and you know what they say about opinions. Every body has one just like ________
