Default New Old Amp Day

I just bought (stole):one like this for $400:
12 watts, 12” Jensen original speaker...works perfectly
Mine’s not in quite as good condition but close and ohhh, the tone! To die for.

I'd suss out a few of those hard-to-get octal preamp tubes as soon as possible - other than that use it well, often, and LOUD...

If the filter caps haven't been replaced you might think bout getting it done. If it hasn't been done I'd refrain from using it until you get them checked out.

An amp tech can also install a grounded plug, too. Tone ain't the only thing to die for with old tube amps!

Might want to find a spare vintage speaker and box up the original. Then, once it is recapped, wail away.

New filter caps make sense. You cant tell when an old one is about to fail, and that can damage other circuits. New quality caps can really silence hiss and hum, too. They are pretty cheap, and I was told to get the best you can find.

Thanks for all the good advice folks. I am going to take it to a guy next week.
This amp was “serviced” in 2004. I believe it was just some tube replacements.
BTW, this amp has a 12” “field coil” speaker in it which makes it even more rare.
It is very quiet until you get it to about 60% volume. At that point it begins to have audible hum with no instrument plugged in. As you increase the volume the hum increases. It has three instrument input jacks and they all work without any issues. This thing is amazing. I can get a nice mild break up at lower volume levels just by digging in a bit. My Tele has a custom overwound bridge pup in it with 5/16 pole pieces. It’s pretty hot and that contributes to what’s going on with the nice crunch.

It sounds like this although this is not the greatest recording.

I like when you use the special EQ mod and turn the amp around backwards.

Sounds real nice!

Nice playing! Your tele sounded very nice through there. I’d love to hear a Strat or Gretsch through that amp.maybe a little more grit...

The advice given regarding the plug and filter caps (as I’m sure you know) are spot on. Those old amps can be great. But they can kill too. In more than one way.

Please post an update after you have her checked out. Very cool vintage find. Thx for sharing!

That was really enjoyable! Give us more when you feel like it. Cool looking amp too.

But is the tone really the same when you remove the mortal terror factor?

I had the amp thoroughly gone over. It didn’t need a thing and the amp tech told me the plug was fine and didn’t need to be replaced.
I plug in to a good quality grounded power strip anyway.
I still can’t believe I own this.
