Default I love old boss stomp boxes...

Used to depend on them for my old electric rig, but now I'm just playing acoustic and am still finding applications where they work well.

Does anyone use an old-school Boss CS-2 compressor pedal as a pre-amp?

The workflow I'm experimenting with is:
Martin OMJM > Boss CS-2 > LR Baggs PADI > Fishman Loudbox Artist

I'm getting some very nice tones.

Any suggestions?

Thank You

Curious why you chose to put the compressor before the PADI rather than on the effects loop.

it wasn't a conscious decision, i will def try the CS-2 in the effects loop. do you think that would change the tone noticeably?

thanks

I don’t know - that’s just the usual setup. Might be a slight difference due to the input impedance of the PADI.

My setup is HFN -> CS-3 -> GE-7 -> line input CP8.

I put the compressor first because the HFN is passive with no volume control giving the compressor the same signal level (and therefore consistent settings) regardless of how I might tweak EQ or volume with the GE-7.

I like that the pedals are basically indestructible, have their own 9v battery backup (and can run 50+ hours on a battery for the above), big knobs and footswitches I can see standing, viscous POTs so my settings are retained between gigs, can be set far enough apart to hit just one footswitch reliably, and you can carry just what you need.

I've got an RC-1, RV-5, and SD-1 which mostly look nice on a shelf at home.

Just make sure if you use power adapters that it's a Boss product or, at the very least, rated the same as manufacturers specs. If you don't you will fry them as what happened to my DD-3.

Bummer

I had the Boss Cs-3 and the Cs-2. The CS-3 can do the CS-2. Then I got the CP-1X and it sounded the best with acoustic and electric. I also still have my TR-2, BF-2, and PHI-r and sold my Dm-2 for alot, considering the wear the pedal had, and bought the DM-2waza to use with my acoustics.
