Default Gibson's Latest...

Surprised to learn about Gibson's posted (now taken down) threats against other luthiers and generally negative rant of recent days. Even more surprised to hear absolutely zero about it here on AGF. Since I can't see the original video anymore I won't speak to it, but it sure caused a negative reaction from builders and musicians I know and respect.

I am surprised no ones jumped on it. My take on it is that he/they didn't mean for it to come off so harshly. But it did. Not a good start for the new guy. I have to admit I do have something against him though. He use to do the reviews of vintage guitars that were for sale. He'd play them with a leather jacket on that had zippers and metal snaps. It really bugged me. Very expensive one of a kind vintage collectable guitars and he's wearing zippers. Very elitist.

Meh. Doesn't seem like much of a threat:

"Video pulled after outcry", reads the headline. Man, it sure doesn't take much to raise an outcry these days.

I like Mark’s videos in general. He has very little filter. That said, in the world of corporate PR you have to be more delicate and diplomatic.

I watched the video just a few minutes ago. Much ado about nothing, really. Just a promo piece sanctioned/produced by Gibson to get themselves in the spotlight, once again.

A promo piece is supposed to foster a positive image of a company. This video was ill conceived.

I am reminded of a fabled encounter between Henry and Bruce Weber (Weber mandolins) at Namm? when Weber first produced the Weber Fern F5.

Henry took it down, admired the instrument and chatted to Bruce, then said words to the effect of "cease and desist!"

Mr Weber's response was not recorded but seemed to have intimated that Henry might go forth and multiply.

As far as other builders emulating the original designs of the famous names, I think it is a little late to institute IP rules (or whatever).

I know that Martin long ago decided that they would not patent their designs as they were confident that they could always build he best, and although that might no longer be necessarily true, they can certainly build more.

Whatever Gibson's new junk yard dog says. Won't make any difference.

In 1896 (TMK) Frank Henry Martin took a block of Brazilian rosewood from the company's stash and hand-carved a plaque, which hung over C.F. Martin III's bed during his growing-up years:

Non multa sed multum

Translation: not many but much...

RIP 1896-1986...

My thought was *why* release that video in the first place?

It was totally missing the mark on the intended audience.

As an end consumer, I had zero interest in the message.

Unless I was going to start making knock off Gibson instruments.

Not to get too, well legal, and I could be wrong, but I seem to remember reading that in terms of copyright or trademark infringement, courts have mostly decided that since both Gibson and Fender have not enforced the authorship of their designs for nigh on 60+ years, they've pretty much said they don't care. If they are to start caring now, I doubt the courts will rule in their favor.

Of course, anyone can sue anyone else over anything so perhaps this threat will serve to scare some folks...

Best,
PJ

Horse feathers.

.... and that chap who used to work at Carters , I never liked him, playing prized elderly guitars with his Hell's Angel studded leather jacket.
