Default Elixir Strings Are Too Bright, What's Warmer Sounding?

I’ve landed on DR Sunbeams to calm the top end “sizzle” on my Taylor 314 ... give ‘em a few hours playing time to settle in and see what you think ... not coated, but they seem to last pretty well.

caveat: they are round cores, so string accordingly.

Monels are what people always seem to recommend for warmth, but it definitely depends on the guitar type, i tried them on my rosewood b/s dread, they sounded very very bad, very metallicy even after over a month, i'll never use them again on that guitar. I hear they do better on mahogany though.

I've never met a dead PB string I didn't like.

It's when they don't intonate is when they are changed.

I'm actually a fan of dead strings, it brings out more ' soul ' of my guitar.

I've been a longtime user of Martin SP PB's and John Pearse PB both in medium but I have recently converted to 80/20's as they seem to bring out more the tonal characteristics of the wood tone rather then the string if that makes sense. When the SP's changed the formula, the trebles lost the fatness and the wound strings lost some presence.

So now my 80/20 brand of choice is Ernie Ball. Initially I used Earthwoods, love 'em. However, I moved up to the EB Paradigms. They sound the same as the Earthwoods, but last longer which is nice as I was changing strings every 2-3 shows which is twice a week!!

If you want serious warmth in a PB, the Dunlop strings have it, and they are very high quality as they make them in-house... but they are way to warm for me, however, you may like them. They are definitely warmer then SP's and JP's.

If you like Elixir, try the Polywebs. They’re a little darker.
