I believe it is in the wood. I recently built a Cajon and noticed the exact same horizontal marks across the grain that your guitar shows. It wasn't there when the wood was raw and sanded. The lines appeared after I stained the wood. I sanded it again the marks went away only to reappear after staining again. It still baffles me.

No the lines don't go into the rosette.

Baffling it right, khedquist.

That is very odd, can you see those same lines from the inside? At the price you paid for that guitar I'm guessing it's not a double (or sandwich) top which would be my only other thought.

George will very likely answer your e-mail. Not necessarily quickly, but this is intriguing, so who knows? Make sure you send him pix, and be upfront that you're looking for the answer to a riddle, and nothing else.

When I had TR problems with my O32, George was very attentive to communication and explanation.

FWIW, I'm going with the sander/planer "chatter" explanation.

I used a mirror to look inside and, no, you can't see them inside. It is a solid top and it's very well made.

I would love to know what the back is made of too. I'm thinking ovangkol?

Don`t know..but how does it compare to my Lakewood walnut...

and I know yours has lines on the top but my 1963 Takamine has some weird line-age going on on the back...could be absolutely no connection between the two or...

It's similar to your walnut but I can't say for sure.

Those lines on your Tak look more "natural". Probably just the colouring in the wood.
