Default Whats your favourite self-penned tune or song.

Whats piece have you written that gives you the most personal satisfaction rather than commercial success?.

My favorite self-penned song is one titled "Fly To The Heavens". What started out as a third-person take on the subject of spirituality and dying (which I am not, yet), suddenly became first-person when I realized I was writing about my own spiritual reflection in considering my own mortality. It kinda freaked me out actually.

Fly To The Heavens
(c) Tom Guertin, All Rights Reserved

It's been too long since I prayed to You
Hope You're listening 'cause I'm feeling blue / today
A bit tired and lonely

Got to thinking 'bout the life I live
Knowing I have so much love to give / I say
You're my one and only

Build:
When the time has come
To meet You / my maker
I'll raise my heavy arms
And spread my wings
Then...

Chorus:
I'll fly / to the heavens / when I die
I believe / I'll one day / get that high
I'll behold / my saviour in paradise
I'll fly / to the heavens / when I die

The love You share will make me whole
When your spirit fills my soul / I'll know
The meaning of devotion

Will you show me in the dead of night
How to find Your guiding light / I'll go
To the heart of emotion

Build:
When the time has come
To meet You / my maker
I'll raise my heavy arms
And spread my wings
Then...

Chorus:
I'll fly / to the heavens / when I die
I believe / I'll one day / get that high
I'll behold / my saviour in paradise
I'll fly / to the heavens / when I die

Bridge:
As each midnight hour draws near
I fall asleep / I have no fear
When it's time to take Your hand
Your wish / dear Lord / is my command

(One section of bridge music)

Chorus:
I'll fly / to the heavens / when I die
I believe / I'll one day / get that high
I'll behold / my saviour in paradise
I'll fly / to the heavens / when I die

Chorus:
Yeah, I'll fly / to the heavens / when I die
I believe / I'll one day / get that high
I'll behold / my saviour in paradise
I'll fly / to the heavens / when I die

Oh yeah, I'll fly / to the heavens / when I die

There's one I wrote way back in early '69 that gets a lot of appreciation any time I do it. Actually, it's kind of a novelty "talkin' blues" tune called "The Girl Across The Hall". It bears a strong resemblence to Arlo Guthrie's "Alice's Restaurant", but I SWEAR, I wrote the song at least six months before I'd even HEARD "Alice's Restaurant"! I think Arlo stole the tune from me and I wish I could sue his pants off!!

I've written quite a few, but, come to think of it, just about all of them have a sort of "blues" feeling to them. I have no idea why that is. Maybe I missed my calling?

In early June of '97, I sat up in bed one night and lyrics started coming to me.

I got up and started writing, and within a short time I had 3/4 of a song written about my relationship with my Dad. I was able to finish it in time to record for him for Father's Day.

He ran restaurants from the early 70's until he retired, typically 60-65 hour weeks, strange hours of course. There were times when he had a hard time turning off being "the boss" when he got home, and when I was 15-25 or so and trying to make my own way, we butted horns more than we should have.

This was written when I was 35, at a time when we were both starting to mellow out....him thinking about retiring, and me realizing some of the incredible sacrifices he'd made to give me the life I had when I was young.

As the years progressed, we have evolved into the best of friends. For the last 8 years or so, we have played golf several days a week together....unfortunately this year is going to be different, his health is catching up with him at 76. After a bout with pneumonia this winter (and being borderline diabetic) he's slowed down immensely and our relatioinship is headed to another phase.

The opening line has morphed from "looking at 40" to "looking at 50". This is a recent recording I made with my Mcknight for Tim and Mary's "Media" page....

I have a lot of originals and really like maybe 5-6 (written after taking several Berklee workshops). If I had to pick one probably "Firends Along the Way", first song on my SoundClick site below...........

Here's mine. "Daddy's Old Guitar" title track from my second CD.

Listen here: http://www.movinghandsmusic.com/audi...s_Old_hifi.m3u

Daddy's Old Guitar - KC Craine

In the corner of a closet
In a corner tucked away
I found an old black case the other day
It wasn't much to look at
It wasn't much to see
Most folks would have thrown that old black case away
With it's rusty silver latches
And lots of dents and scratches
And a lopsided lid that shuts down a little too far
But I knew it in a moment
The moment I opened up the case
To Daddy's Old Guitar

Inside was an old brown Martin
Made out of wood and steel
That my Daddy used to play for us at night
When he'd put us kids to bed
He'd sing a song or two
And tuck us under the covers nice and tight
And he'd sit out in the hallway
Just to keep us kids bad dreams away
And we'd make him promise not to go too far
And we'd listen in the darkness
Those songs were like dreams to us at night
With Daddy's Old Guitar

Then one night Daddy didn't come home
The doctors said there was nothing more that could be done
He left that old black case alone
There were no more songs left to be sung
That night, on Daddy's Old Guitar

I finally learned to play it
A couple months ago
Just trying to play a bit like Daddy did
It feels good in my fingers
Feels good in my soul
To take that old black case out from where it hid
Now I play for my kids
The same songs that my Daddy did
And when I leave I leave the door ajar
And sit out in the hallway
Just to keep those bad dreams away
With the songs I play, on Daddy's Old Guitar

There are some very nice tunes here - hope to hear more of them!

I do not know why, but I think this is my favorite song I ever wrote up til now. It is the song I "meant" to write when I wrote it, if that makes sense. I was really into trying to learn the double-bass type style of fingerpicking, and just always liked it for some reason. It is not a song a lot of people ever really liked if they hear it, but it is the one I like best.

Also, the video was fun to make so stupid:
Sometimes Suddenly Somewhere Else

" A giant rock with your name on it fell from the sky and squished my heart; I didn't see it coming and couldn't get out of the way."

A simple love song.

Most of my songbook is originals, which one gives me the most satisfaction depends on what day you ask me.

Probably "Path of Sorrows"
