Cool thread!! I have about 4 that I'm really proud of. The first being the one in my signature about my old J-45, my dad and me. Or maybe it's just about life, I've never been too sure.

Then there is this one that I wrote and then had a songwriter friend help me smooth it out. It was for my wife's friend who's 2 year old son had been diagnosed with cancer. While he was at St. Jude's we had a version of it available online for purchase with the money going directly to the family.

Then there is this one I wrote for my wife in the weeks leading up to our 25th wedding anniversary.

And lastly one more for my wife that I wrote after that anniversary that's basically a "what comes next" song.

This is probably my favourite instrumental, out of those I've stumbled across over the years. I cannot sing to save my life, surpassing even Leo Kottke’s ‘geese fart’ description.

This is Matthew's Tune, written after the birth of our first son in 1986.

OK. I did this one to demonstrate looper use, but buzz ahead to 3:25 for a pass through "Fairbury's Fancy".

Heads up. This is a 10 year old thread revived today. Most of those old links don't work now.

But some of them do, and the current ones do too.

The subject is still on point, regardless of the antiquity of the original thread.

Listen away. As I said "most of the old ones". The issue for me was that briefly I thought there might be some issue with my computer.

Lay Your Brother Down

It’s been such a long time since I came back to this place
Don’t guess anyone here would still recognise my face
Some things have changed but it’s mostly stayed the same
This quiet little town could drive a man insane

Lay your brother down, oh lay your brother down
I leave for good tomorrow when I lay my brother down

When daddy lost his job down the factory making cars
He’d piss up all our money drinking in McHatton’s bar
And momma she tried so hard to keep things going straight
But hard work wasn’t enough to put food on our plates

Lay your brother down, oh lay your brother down
I leave for good tomorrow when I lay my brother down

Then daddy ran off from his debts and you grew up so fast
You became a man, you left your dreams in the past
The second I turned sixteen I needed out of here I knew
I only wish there’d been some way you could have joined me too

Lay your brother down, oh lay your brother down
I leave for good tomorrow when I lay my brother down

The smoke that filled the sky from the factory’s long since gone
So many shopfronts boarded up, prosperity’s a con
Tomorrow when I bury you in this barren ground
I’ll hope you’re somewhere better than this godforsaken town

Lay your brother down, oh lay your brother down
I leave for good tomorrow when I lay my brother down

I've "composed" a lot of instrumentals. This one is my favorite. Unfortunately my classical technique leaves a lot to be desired and it hurt the presentation of the tune. I play with flesh, not nails and that's a no-no of sorts on nylon, at least the way I do it

Here is a remix of it anyway.

Don't know that I could pick a "favorite"... sort of like "which one of your children do you love the most?"!

Been writing songs for over 50 years now, and I've loved them all... mostly pieces with lyrics, but a good number of instrumental tunes, as well...

I guess the most recent ones get the most play, both at home and performing, just because they're "new", not because they're better or I like them more.

A fairly recent instrumental tune (well, recent withing the last 5 years or so) is The Ozark Raga - a name that, at first I felt pretentious and slightly dishonest about, until a younger friend of mine who was raised in Northern Arkansas, told me it was a perfect name for the song! Don't currently have a recording of it that's anything close to representative... I'll post something when I have it!

There are a bunch of favorites! (gotta like your own stuff, right? LOL!)

One that I enjoy playing and has gotten a lot of positive feedback on SC, is "Calliope" which is in DADGAD. I hope to get a better recording of this tune some time in the near future. "Evening Rain" currently in my signature is also in the favorite category
