I use this On-Stage guitar stool, 28" tall, pretty comfortable, also can be used to hold your guitar safely, folds up, pretty lightweight...

A lot of folks use these. Can't beat the price or portability.

BUT - get them rotated by mistake and they can suddenly fold up, with you headed to the floor and the stool useless from then on. You want to have the rungs parallel to your chest.

Huh? There's a catch that prevents them from folding up. And they're pretty sturdy. I was 270lbs when I started using one (I'm at 210 now).

This is a tripod camping chair. Can buy them about anywhere for $5-15. They weigh just slightly more than nothing.

You can DIY one also, which might give you a better "look" as a Busker...???

Sit on it at the wrong angle and you'll see what i mean. I've folded two or three doing this. Sit right and they work well. The catch does not unlock; that's not the problem. The legs bend if torqued wrong.

While I would prefer to stand and not lug a stool from room to room, the hospital has to have stools somewhere. I played a regular gig like that for 10 years and knew where "the stool" was kept. The first thing I did after getting my coat off, if I was going to sit, was to get my stool.

The folding tripod camping stools others have suggested are about as portable as you can get. The only problem with some of them is height. A lot of the ones I’ve tried were too low so I ended up with my knees at chin level and no way to comfortably hold the guitar. Some of the on-line heights shown refer to the length of the legs which is more than the seat height when set up.

For a more robust application, I second the drum throne with backrest suggestions. The better ones are very rugged and, more importantly, quite comfortable for long sets.

Mity Lite Flex 1 folding chair is the ultimate portable seating IMHO.

It's classy, super-comfortable, light weight, easy to fold and carry, and not expensive.

Last time I purchased one I opted for the lower priced single chair from Home Depot. It looks almost identical, but has a 300 pound rating vs. the 1000 pound rating of the Flex 1.

I have both types and the Home Depot is slightly less weight, so easier to carry room to room.

I also play a cajon drum so I usually take that along when I'm playing. Not bad to sit on it plus you can store things inside. Minimal footprint when you're in tight quarters too.

If you are careful, it won't happen. I haven't always been so careful.
