Default Need help! Replacement tuners

Hi friends,

does any one know the name/type/model of these tuners? They are done and I‘m looking for replacement.
The guitar is an 1978 Ibanez Concord J-542 AV.

Thanks
Peter

Hello Peter,

A picture of the tuners would be helpful. For a guitar that old, you may not find the exact same tuner, but a more modern replacement might be an upgrade. Gotoh tuners are excellent and they come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

Hi Peter,

These look like they would be a direct replacement:

https://www.stewmac.com/parts-and-ha...d3-tuners.html

Since the guitar is a 12-string, you would need to order 2 sets.

If you are looking for an upgrade, these Gotoh SG-381 tuners would be good:

https://g-gotoh.com/product/sg381/?lang=en

The SG-381's come in different finishes and button styles, so you can choose whatever you like and.

Before you order anything, check the dimensions of your existing tuners and make sure the new ones are the same size (or at least very close). Good luck!

Hi Peter,

A word of caution before you order anything, check the button sizes to make sure they aren't too big. 12-string guitars generally use smaller buttons than 6-string guitars.

Another option would be these "6 on a plate type":

https://www.stewmac.com/parts-and-ha...ad-guitar.html

However, installation of this type of tuner would involve drilling new screw holes in the headstock. And you have to make sure that the spacing between the tuner posts matches the post holes in your guitar. Again, check the measurements before you order.

Hey Peter those style tuners are easily repairable. They were used on dang near every "offshore" guitar from that era. Whatever one you say is "done" pull the screws and the cover should pop right off exposing the gears (I'd pull the string or strings first). Most of the time the screw just backs out of the driven gear. Little dab of blue loctite and it's good for another 25 years. I can post a picture later today if needed. HTH

edcmat, that are great news. I will try that.
And you seem to right that those tuners have been a standard. I just found out I have an old bellied up and unplayable Cort 12-string with exactly the same tuners. So, I even have replacement tuners if the others are not serviceable animose.
Of course, I will first try what you suggested. Thanks!

Yes they are easy to work with. They used them on cheap electrics too. Early Epiphones used them. Avoid using liquid lubrication as the oil can seep into the screw holes and weaken the wood. Better to use a light grease.
