Default 2 glasses of wine + 1 fingerstyle jazz standard = total trainwreck

I should have known better. I don't understand how people can drink and play.

Years of doing both, no doubt. I saw Joe Walsh and he was so drunk he could barely stand or talk. Soon as the music started his playing was right there and he sang with nary a slur.

Yeah, it's likely one of the things that kept me from having a drinking problem throughout my life.

If I have more than one beer or one glass of wine, my fingertips actually start losing a bit of feeling. Consequently, my vibrato, slides, bends and accuracy deteriorate.

Guitar playing is an athletic endeavor (even though the muscles involved are tiny). Alcohol and fine motor control don't coexist.

I've watched many musicians play drunk. Many people don't notice, but I do.

I've not played drunk, but a few drinks to loosen up doesn't hurt me. Most every afternoon I mix up a stiff rum and Coke then go out on my front porch to wind down and play before supper. But I'm not really an occasional drinker.

I read this post after the one that asked how you write a song. And the following came to me:

"Not an Occasional Drinker"

Most every day, before I set down to play,
A Coke and some rum and a shine from the sun
Just one of them drinks and I say what I thinks
And the rocking chair creaks until the music is done.....

Obliged for the inspiration, mate.

Back in the day, there was a bunch of bands in the neighborhood in Bklyn that rehearsed in the same studio. We used to have a sort of friendly competition to see who ran up the biggest bar tab while playing gigs. The winningest band, will remain nameless, had the "drunkest man in the universe" on keyboards, they were tough to beat.
