Your Favourite Fingerstyle Patterns
Thought it would be good to have a thread for fingerstyle patterns, preferably in tab format. I really like the Girl From the North Country one, have used it in a bunch of my own songs.

Just thought I'd straighten out your sloppy tab, LOL:
Code:

I'm evidently deficient as I play the notes I want to hear and don't really know how to do a pattern.

To be fair it’s probably the other way about if you can think in notes. I’m quite new to guitar so still struggle to play melody rather than patterns applied to chords, which is as simple as just learning the pattern and then using it as you see fit.

One of my favourites is Sunset Soon Forgotten, by Iron and Wine:
I don't play it quite right (I play a slightly simplified version), so I shouldn't tab it out, although if I did it would look impeccably good, LOL. |

All of them and usually intermixed to keep from flat lining interest. That's now. When starting out it was alternating bass line, forward and reverse rolls because they were easiest to grasp and build upon.

I don't use patterns. I learned some "patterns" when doing some exercises to learn Travis style, but after that what your fingers do depend on the tune. If you are taking a song and trying to play it finger style you have to do an arrangement that has the melody and the bass notes are there for accompaniment and other notes are "filler" notes. If you are playing and singing and don't want to strum and are just "faking" finger style then watch you don't make every tune sound the same.

I’ve only been playing guitar for two and a half years as an adult learner, much as I would rather be a master of fingerpicking melody like Bert Jansch it’s still exceptionally difficult for me to reach that stage so right now patterns are part of the learning process.

Being a long time guitar player who just started getting interested in fingerstyle about a year or so ago, learning the basic Travis style alternating bass both “inside out” and then “outside in” was where I started. Then I learned a basic pluck.
I wanted to use this style of playing to more fit the style of the songs that I have been writing lately and TBman is correct in needing to be careful about not letting the accompanying pattern sounding the same. All of that comes from time, practice, and learning how the fluidly switch up what you are doing. All of it has to be learned at a SLOW tempo at first. I mean really slow in my experience.

Justin Sandercoe actually has a free series of lessons on fingerstyle ("Folk Fingerstyle"):
https://www.justinguitar.com/modules/folk-fingerstyle He goes into patterns quite a bit. |

I hope this isn't too tricky for you. It introduces a couple of hammer ons and a pull off over what is otherwise two bars of Am and two bars of G.

Guitar master educator Mark Hanson offers two books, Contemporary Travis Picking and The Art of Solo Fingerstyle. Maybe you are using the former (?). Anyhow, Leo Kottke made the comment that you should learn the TP patterns as shown in Hanson’s TP book (just like you are doing now) and then unlearn them (as only Leo could put it). In Mark’s second book, you will leave those patterns behind as you start to play a melody in your arrangements. The point being that you are probably doing the right thing now in building a foundation with learning basic TP patterns but as soon as you start to bring the melody into your playing, the patterns will for the most part go away. But the discipline you learned in practicing the patterns will be invaluable in “unlearning” the patterns as you build into solo fingerstyle arrangements. I don’t believe anyone was being snippy. Most of us have followed the same path of learning the patterns and then putting them behind us (or off to the side) as we ventured down the road of solo fingerstyle playing. Enjoy the journey!

Thanks SprintBob, I'll check out those books. Maybe I took a few comments the wrong way, I would like to break into melody but it's a bit of a source of frustration how hard I find it. |

Here's the link directly to the specific lesson: https://www.justinguitar.com/guitar-...lations-fo-104 That one is for the major scale, and there is also one for the minor scale. Of course, playing scales, like patterns, should also be "unlearned", which really means being able to use them for creative purposes without thinking about them. |
