Default No Sweethearts this Valentine's Day

Came across this announcement earlier today:

"For the first Valentine’s Day in 153 years, there will be no Sweethearts candies, those little chalky heart-shaped delights with short messages on them. Necco, the candy’s maker, went bankrupt and its factories are closing."

This was a regular part of my earliest Valentine's Days: using construction paper to make Valentines in school (and we were required to make one for EACH student in the class), putting the Valentines in paper bags with each kids name on it, and each kid getting 2 or 3 or 4 of these cute little candy hearts from the teacher. And my Mom would always buy a big bag of them, and a handful of hearts was the after dinner dessert for a week or two. We'd sit around the table, pass around the bag and take a little pile for ourselves, and each of us reading the messages aloud before we popped them in our mouths. The ritual was at least as sweet as the candy.

Oh well. All things must pass....

With the caveat that I had not eaten one in years, I saw this with some sadness. Kind of like an Easter without Cadbury Cream Eggs.

Oh, no.... so sad. You'd think someone would pick up on the candy line.

Dentists are forecasting less broken teeth and business.

Love those chalky tasting hearts.

Less broken teeth, but more broken hearts.

This may be obvious, but there are other brands of candy hearts: https://www.brachs.com/products/valentines-day.html. My candy-loving son already bought some from CVS and consumed them.
