This wood is so rare that with some creativity the problems could be overcome. I think however it would have to be built with those flaws in mind and on spec. After that, a customer would be found. Salvaged or repurposed woods are always cool. It comes down to price for a client to see those holes. If I have sets without holes and sets with holes, people want the without. Period.
Some side sets from this table had screw holes where the base was attached. Some in only one of the side and a partial hole in the other. People don't want flaws but sometimes small holes are very easy to plug, fill or patch, in the end with this much figure it's just part of the wood. I did not discount those when I sold 20 sets to the same builder. Only about 4 had holes of some kind. I sold all the sets from this table in a week! It was 13 1/2 feet long by 37 inches wide and 1 and 1/8 inch thick. Harvey Leach has some One Piece back Sets out of this on hand. These holes are a bit larger than mine were however in a few years people will take sets let that with no problem, IMHO and end up paying top dollar. [IMG][/IMG]

I would love to own a guitar built from this wood. I like the idea that it is salvaged and don't find the plugs at all disconcerting. Obviously, the wood would command less of an upcharge than would a similar piece without the ebony incursions

Yes, provided I had a good mojo story to go with it. In a similar sense as the attraction of Bob Taylor's pallet guitar.

"Tree" talk
Jay, quit flaunting those pictures of that table!!!!! Every time you post it I die a little more inside just imagining what it was like to have that much "tree" in one room.
Btw, when are you heading out on your cross country excursion? |

I "might" have some of those leftover scraps that I might be making my next guitar accessory box out of. I just had to have something "tree" in my guitar collection and couldn't bring myself to spring a BTO (yet).

A friend of mine has enough wood from "The Tree" to build something like 25 guitars. The stuff he has is the best of the best.
Over the years he's continued to offer me a set or 3 for free but I've never wanted to use it. The size of the blister figure is, in my opinion, just too big in scale for a guitar. I know that sounds kind of arrogant doesn't it. But I just don't like it for a guitar. Jim McCarthy |

"Tree" talk
Well Jim send a set or two my way. I paid a lot for the one set I have and would die for more.

I think a nice inlay would be a good way to disguise the holes and make it more usable...

If the customer is worried about the inclusions, perhaps it might be time for some creative inlay ideas! Sort of like a tattoo cover-up.
It is beautiful, it is rare, and it is "The Tree". There will be someone who wants this wood on their guitar.
