I think the reason the inverted photo shows the moons much easier is because the back brace blends more with the moon shape. However, in actuallity the light colored brace against the dark back wood breaks up the moon shape to the eye.
If the braces visible through the soundhole were stained the same color as the back wood, I think the moons would jump out a bit more, just as "robot man" or "woody" that is all one color jumps out.
