Highlands of Carolina (original)
I began working on this tune during the shutdown for COVID-19. As I began to work it out, I was always reminded of the mountains in my home state of North Carolina. This was probably due to acute homesickness while living in Oklahoma (far from any mountains) which was just heightened by the Coronavirus situation.
This week we were fortunate enough to go visit our folks in NC, so I took the chance to record this tune on my mom's front porch. It's in CGCGCD, recorded on my Larrivee OM-03 sporting D'addario EXP 17 strings. I hope you enjoy it.

Nice, I liked it. Good job!
That's a fun tuning to play/compose in.

Thanks Barry! I appreciate it very much! I’ve been hanging out in this tuning since I began learning Phil Taylor’s “A Place for Solitude.” It hooked me!

Nice song, thanks! Reminds me of Grantchester Meadows...
I rode through Oklahoma going east last summer, came in through the pan handle and flowed out into Arkansas near Muskogee. Over on the pan handle end the flat lands stretched out as far as you could see and was covered with windmills... bleghhh... Hope you get more chances to come home ... -Mike |

I feel ya. There is a beauty in Oklahoma, too...especially the sunsets...but I’d take the mountains any day of the week. The panhandle is some seriously barren lands. Not my favorite place that’s for sure! Eastern Oklahoma is a bit better, some hills and such (they call em mountains, but I disagree). Thanks for listening! Is that a pic along the Blue Ridge? Love that shot!

That's a really nice song! I've also had fun with that tuning.
Makes me think it's time to get out of Florida and head back to the western mountains of NC. Enjoy your visit.

Yep, somewhere south of Asheville recently. I got the idea that there are some pretty nice places in eastern Oklahoma when I was through there on the way home. On the way out there we went from Hazen Arkansas to Amarillo Texas on I-40 one day... that was a long day and Oklahoma City is a tangled mess of construction ... Gotta love the GPS, I came all the way home from New Mexico on back roads. -Mike |

Very nice job with this! Done in one of my favorite tunings.
Al Petteway's Broken Mist is in this tuning and it opened up a whole bunch of originals for me over the years. The Larrivee sounds really nice....congrats on a nice composition!

Now taking the back roads from NM through? That’s the way to do it! I never have the time it seems...always gotta get back for work. Quote:

Very nice Treenewt!
Lovely composition, very nice recording, and very nicely played! I would not have thought that an OM would work well with medium gauge strings, but the guitar sounds great! Well done! - Glenn

Thanks so much Glenn! I appreciate the kind words! I’ve owned two Larrivee OM’s and both seemed built for mediums, where other OMs I’ve had appeared to “choke” a little with heavier strings. I’m quite tickled with this one! Thanks again!
