Without looking at it or seeing pix its not possible to diagnose.
Put a straight edge on the frets and see if there is a dip. With Truss rod adjusting and A proper set up may only be necessary. From 97 is a glued in neck I am pretty sure. From what you describe it sounds like it is a candidate for a couple hundred dollar neck reset. Can you return it? |

Without seeing the guitar it's hard to know but my guess is that the string slots in the nut could be filed a little deeper and that the saddle could be lowered as well. Probably not much but enough to make the guitar more comfortable to play.
Take it to a shop that specializes in acoustic instruments.
