Question Classical GAS (well, maybe hybrid)

I've been thinking about venturing into the nylon string world but not a classical due to the neck width and flat fingerboard. I don't want to spend much because I may not like it. Where I live, I don't have access to music stores with big inventories to play before I play.

What are some entry level cross-overs with a 1 3/4"-ish nut? I don't need electronics. My max budget is $500 (new or used). Thanks for your suggestions!

Hi,

Any 1 3/4" nut crossovers are hard to find, as far as I know, especially in that price range. If you are not apposed to a 1 7/8" size range, then there are options. Also, they will more than likely all have electronics in them.. no big deal though. I'm concentrating on new models, as the used market can be tricky, especially since you don't have many music stores to choose from locally.

You can always look at the Yamaha NTX700 series (Cedar or Spruce topped) at you max $499.

Just a tad over budget, you can go with a Cordoba Fusion 12, at $549 (Cedar top):

If you want to come in under budget, you can go with the Breedlove Discovery series, at $399 (Englemann Spruce top).

Or for you max budget, the Breedlove Pursuit series, at $499 (Cedar top):

They all have electronics, but the Breedlove Pursuit has the least obtrusive set-up of the bunch (no barn-door and a hidden soundhole controls). That one would be my pick of the bunch, truthfully.

hope this helps some

I had one of the Yamaha NTX 700 models that were mentioned in an earlier post here. Very easy transition from steel and they have great electronics. These guitars are very well built, lovely guitars, but the robust construction and thin body cause a bit of compromise in pure acoustic nylon tone.
I also owned a steel string version of the Pursuit model from Breedlove. For the money, that was a great little guitar all around.

If your budget can flex a bit the Córdoba mentioned might be the best acoustic sounding one of those mentioned thus far. Cordoba also has a new all mahogany model called the C4ce that is under your targeted budget and has a 1 7/8” neck width.

You could also opt for the Córdoba C5 Dolce, which is a 7/8 sized classical guitar with a slightly shorter scale length and nut width. It Is very much within your budget and from a pure acoustic nylon perspective , the C5 Dolce would be measurably better than the narrow bodied crossover models. The nut width is not quite as narrow as you would like, but the combination of the shorter scale and slightly narrower nut width will make the transition easy enough. Plus, the investment is very modest. I have a full sized C5. They might be the best sounding sub 300 dollar classical on the market these days.

If your thinking of playing non classical styles, one of the options with electronics might be more worth considering.... nicely amplified fingerstyle nylon guitar can be exceptionally pleasant.

One other pure acoustic option..... the Taylor 12N Academy nylon acoustic model. About 50 above your budget but it’s a Taylor, so you might be more comfortable purchasing sight unseen since you play a Taylor already.

I have owned a Yamaha NTX 700 and wasn’t fond of the neck. Also had a Taylor 214-ceN. I now have an Alvarez AC 65 HCE. Best of the three IMHO and well within your budget. Just my $.02

A bit over 500, but maybe look at the Kremona Sofia. I've played one and thought it was dollar for dollar, one of the best deals around

you can play anything on a Cordoba GK Studio, and easily available at GC's. A bit over your price range but worth it, and you can find them used cheap. I have a couple I bought at around $350 each.

Too narrow of a neck will be counter productive because of the thick low tension strings. Don't treat a nylon string as an alternate to a steel, treat it as it's own thing and learn to use it for what it does best and you will be happier.

I will say though that there is nothing like the growl of the low strings on a classical, and once you get used to the sound you may find that your steel strings sound really tinny.
