Brother, you come up here and I'll introduce you to REAL Canadian maple syrup. It will be almost as sweet as those maple guitars you have.

I will be delivering my latest guitar to Eric Schoenberg tomorrow. It is a Maple Schoenberg "Standard", what I call an ES-000, very familiar design-wise to most as it closely resembles Martin's pre-1930 Long Scale 000. Martin allegedly made only one Maple 000 in its early history. That was in 1916 (I was told) but it has never been seen by any living person, or they haven't mentioned it. This guitar's Maple and Mahogany neck were stained with a dye I made from Pernambuco. I could not be more pleased with the sound of this instrument.

Thank you, Bruce.
Allegedly, there are more Bruce's per capita in Oz than here in the US, so it still amuses me to use the name for other than myself. Pretty as it may be, I think this guitars sounds better than it looks. Yay, Maple!!! |

No problem there Bruce. After acquiring my Larrivee custom shop flamed Maple I just can't stop playing it , it sounds sooooo good.

Put me down as a huge fan of a) Bruce Sexauer guitars and b) Maple. One of my favorite guitars I own with what I consider a great all around sound is a Kinnaird OM maple I bought used here on the AGF. I think the Sexauer and the Kinnaird could complete anyone's collection and fill top spots in said collection, the Sexauer is BRW topped with Italian, the Maple is topped with Sitka.

Having confessed I love maple I must also admit that I also briefly owned 2 maple guitars that just didn't work for me. The Maton 12-string I've already mentioned and a beautiful little 1996 Taylor 422- quilted maple. I just couldn't cope with the lack of depth in the Taylor, it was OK for fingerstyle work but an extremely poor strummer.

I know where you are coming from. Got my first maple guitar this year too, and I have to confess, I love the sound (and looks!).

It was thirty years ago today...
Well, close enough.
In 1988 I bought my Martin J65M.. Maple/Sitka Jumbo body. I played every Martin and Gibson I could find in Oregon and Washington, and after months of searching, I "settled" on my Big Maple Martin. It was my main player for over twenty years. (I'll tell another day why and what I bought to replace it as my main player) I still enjoy that sweet thing. The mid and high clarity of the Maple joined with the low end of the Jumbo, makes for a surprisingly balanced tone, but oh boy, can it get loud!! Also had a Martin Women and Music Flamed Maple (00-16DBFM) for a couple years. Yup, I get it. |

Not as pretty as some of yours... But once I got 'er broken in she's become one of my favorite guitars. I have no idea why people turn their noses up at maple. If you want a guitar that can do everything- Maple.
The secret to maple is 200 hours of Tonerite. Trust me.

I'm hearing a lot of talk about maple - with NO VISUALS. How about the backs of those 3 guitars??

Not a bad problem to have..
I've been intrigued by maple for a while. I will admit to the revoiced Taylor 600 line being the first thing to pull me in, but since then, I've seen a bunch of maple guitars from builders like Collings and others.. they always give me pause. Especially a *good* maple neck.. nothing like it. We'll see, but.. another tonewood which is kind of circulating in my mind.

I have played a few Matons, and in fact I happen to own a very pretty 1953 Maton Archtop. I can tell you that among all the guitars I have played, Maton and Sexauer are diametrically opposed philosophically. Those I’ve seen have been sturdy enough to use as weapons in the outback, whereas my stuff can literally be picked up by a gust of wind and when it lands on the other side of the stage on the concrete, it doesn’t have enough enertial mass to scratch the finish. Yes, that happened, and it might have been worse if it had hit something. I haven’t yet weighed the ES, but I d be surprised if it is over 3.6 lb. that’s a hair over 1 1/2 kilos for those down under.
