Default Sexauer JB-15-D Pernambuco/Adirondack

Here's the progress on my 2nd build with Bruce. This commission will contain some features that will be firsts for me and Bruce, starting with the body style. It will be a JB (fully asymmetrical) mini (15" lower bout) dreadnaught with cutaway. I also believe this will be his first pairing of Pernambuco and Red spruce.

Beautiful set of quartersawn Pernambuco:

Adirondack red spruce from Old Standard Wood:

The mini-dread will have Koa accents:

Joined back:

The top exhibits some medullary rays, which is somewhat rare in Adirondack:

Red purfling all around:

Red spruce braces:

New bracing pattern:

walrus, this is going to be a great build to watch... that pernambuco looks amazing.

I spent plenty of time a while back looking at the thread about your JB-16 Brazilian/German. I thought that was one of the most beautiful guitars I had ever seen... is it possible this will will top it?

I'd be really interested to hear how the two compare when this build is complete and you get to play them side by side.

Cheers, berf

Oh No, just when I think I have recovered from GAS yet another Sexauer build thread starts up and has me frantically checking the state of my GAS fund ...

I just love Bruce's approach, craftsmanship and sensibility that is so evident in these threads.

Prepare to be thrilled with your Sexauer pernambuco/red spruce JB mini D..

I would suggest you have a thesaurus handy when you get ready to write your review of this guitar.. bookmark the pages for "clarity", "balance" and "projection"...!

I'm curious as to who requested or recommended red spruce for the top..you or Bruce..?

Thanks for the comments everyone.

Berf,

I love my JB-16 dearly; it's still my go-to and it's two years old already! I'm looking for the mini-D to complement the big sound of that guitar, because it will be hard to beat.

LC,

Originally, I spec'ed Carpathian and had a set picked out. I then had the pleasure of playing a 1942 D28 which made me reconsider my tonal goals for this build. Hard to describe but clarity, focus and power without a lot of overtones with warmth. If I wanted that sound, I thought why not have red spruce like the Martin, plus I was very curious to see what Bruce could do with the wood paired with the qualities of Pernambuco.

Whoa, this is really something else, congrats! My Sexauer is my "GO TO" guitar as well, it does stuff to my senses that no other guitars I own can... I'm really interested to try a Pernambuco some day... My eyes will be excited to see what's next!

walrus, I'm guessing you had to use a juicy carrot or a large stick to get Bruce to agree to the soundport? Is that another first?

Looks lovely so far! Very clean work.
I'm not usually a fan of dreadnought shapes, but I must admit that asymmetrical body is nice...

If I may ask, what is the fabric for on the sides? I've spotted it on a couple of other Sexauer guitars, but no other builders so far.

It helps the sides stay intact incase of a crack. Martin uses them all the time.

Thanks everyone again for the comments!

Berf,

This is Bruce's second soundport. We had a broad discussion about it, talking about the pros & cons, his method, etc. My experience with soundports is limited and I wanted to see (hear) what the fuss is about. I did want to make sure Bruce believed this would be a value-add and not some fruitless exercise in his estimation. He was game.
