Default McKnight Build - New Model - Nashville 2011

I'm thrilled to share that I am taking delivery of a McKnight guitar at the upcoming Nashville show (IBMA Fan Fest) later this month. I will post more details about the process as time allows, but I wanted to highlight one particular aspect of the build at this time, which is that I have the privilege of being the first recipient of Tim's new model, the SDG (Soli Deo Gloria)! The goal here is a highly versatile instrument - think Modified Dread and you will have a good idea of the general shape. I will let Tim chime in with additional thoughts on the new model and share more myself as I can...

Here are some specs:
  • Cocobolo Hollow Back
  • Carpathian top
  • 24.9 - 25.65 Multi-Scale
  • Manzer Wedge
  • Florentine Cutaway

And of course a few pics to start things out:

More pics to follow soon, enjoy!

Nathan

A few more pics:

Working on the rosette - I told Tim and Mary I wanted something that highlighted the natural beauty of the woods and liked the idea of segments of a couple of different woods in the rosette - then I just left the rest up to them - I'm loving the results so far: Cocobolo, Ebony, and Koa...

Quick chime in by Mary.

As many of you know I am allergic to Colobolo, but I take great pre-cautions while working with this wood so I can get pictures for Nathan.

I promise not to lick the wood for entertainment value.

As Nathan mentioned this is the unveiling of our latest model design which we have named Soli Deo Gloria or SDG for short. The new body shape is a culmination of blending several of our existing body shapes with an end design goal of being the most versatile instrument we have produced to date. We wanted to provide the player with a body shape that is extremely comfortable whether standing leading worship or kicked back on the couch all the while with the responsiveness that would appeal to a soft string attack or the most demanding flat picker. It has been a challenge, to design a guitar that would be this versatile, which has been both a labor of love and an answer to prayer.

That's a very nice looking piece of cocobolo. I've not come across any of Tim's guitars here in the UK, but I like the look of what I've seen on the internet.

Any UK McKnight owners?

Congratulations, Nathan, on being the first to get to experience Tim and Mary's new SDG model! It certainly sounds intriguing. I know from first hand experience that they will do an outstanding job, and will make the process as enjoyable as the final product.

Love your choices of woods and rosette. I definitely look forward to watching this guitar's being brought to life. You're going to love it!

Question for Tim,
In the picture where you are working on the cutaway, is this the usual way you fit a Florentine cutaway? Meaning not having a part of the mold to help form the curve. Or are you developing the shape so that you can make a piece for the mold later? I'm no builder, just a curious onlooker.
