Just came across some neat interview videos of some popular custom shop builders and wanted to share:

The interviews were interesting, as I recall, but if memory serves me right, Eric Schoenberg was the only luthier who actually played the instrument on camera.

It did rather make me wonder about the business acumen of some builders, inasmuch as they were given a golden opportunity to promote their instruments, and they chose not to play as much as a single note ...

A number of those builders DO play guitar—a few quite well, but some don't consider themselves accomplished enough to 'play' well enough to show their guitars in the best light.

Martin expert, talented fingerstylist, and able to recognize potential in guitars and in their makers, yes, but Eric is not in any way a luthier. With all due respect.

Well, I'll be the first to confess to paltry business skills. However, when they grab you, pull you out into the courtyard, sit you down in front of the camera, tell you to talk about your guitar(s) as well as give your name, where you're from, any other pertinent information about your shop, all in about 3 minutes-- honestly, playing the guitar was the last thing on my mind. I was seriously trying to make coherent sentences, and not quite pulling that off. Perhaps next time I WILL just play, and leave off the rambling.
Ah but then I'd have an entirely new reason to be embarrassed.

Next time...next time...

Steve

I must have missed something as my understanding was that the purpose of these "interviews" were to introduce the builders. I thought that the mini concerts were for the purpose of demonstration and to introduce the guitars.

I have no problem with builders who aren't decent players...

I have more of an issue with fantastic players who can't build a decent guitar!!

Enjoyed watching those. I was just waiting on every one of the vids for the builder to at least strum his guitar, finally Eric came through.
