R.I.P. Kobe Bryant. He was an amazing athlete, and he died traveling with his daughter, her teammate, and the teammate's parents. As I said to my kids, tragedy doesn't discriminate by age or social class. Sympathies to their families and Kobe's many fans.

Really classy and heart-rending moment by the Spurs and Raptors today. They started their game with each team letting the 24 second clock run out in honor of his #24. After both teams had taken a violation, then they started the game part of the game... Probably mostly Popovich's idea - he and Kyle Lowry embraced after they'd done that before they started playing in earnest...

I believe every game tonight is doing the same thing.

Seems like there were nine victims in the crash...

Los Angeles County officials said the Sunday morning helicopter crash that killed NBA legend Kobe Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, also claimed the lives of seven other victims.

Actually, some are taking it a step further. The first team with the ball takes an eight second violation by not bringing the ball over half court, then the other team takes a 24 second violation. Kobe wore both 8 and 24 with the Lakers.

..I was at the Blazers/Pacers game last night...that’s what they did only in reverse with the first team taking the 24 second violation...there was also a touching tribute and 24 seconds of silence before the start of the game...

....the players were not smiling and there was a visibly somber atmosphere on the floor...but they all played their butts off....Lillard must have been channeling Kobe and scored 50...

....one of those tragic endings that just leaves you asking why...

Sad beyond words. Thinking about his family and dealing with such a loss

On an unrelated note, my daughter's name is also Gianna.

Being a Laker fan since 1980 I was naturally a huge Kobe fan. I was so sad when he retired but that sadness turned to excitement when I started learning about all the things he was doing. The man seemed to be on another level with his new ventures, just like he was with basketball.
This hit me hard. I miss him already and I think we all lost because he was going to do great things.

The FAA released accident statistics for the leading causes of fatal General Aviation accidents for 2001-2016. The top nine were...

1. Loss of Control Inflight
2. Controlled Flight Into Terrain
3. System Component Failure – Powerplant
4. Fuel Related
5. Unknown or Undetermined
6. System Component Failure – Nonpowerplant
7. Unintended Flight In IMC
8. Midair Collisions
9. Low-Altitude Operations

If the helicopter really were descending at 4000 feet/minute at impact, it does sound like a loss of control, although we have no idea why. Very sad result and surprising with an experienced pilot. He had requested a Special VFR (Visual Flight Rules) clearance which required him to maintain one statute mile of visibility and be clear of clouds at all times. I imagine the pilots had done this many times, but that's an aggressive move flying low northwest of LA because of the challenging terrain.
