Default Pore filling on Granadillo?

Hi all,

I am an amateur builder, I have finished a few instruments and I am about to finish another one. This is a flat top acoustic guitar with granadillo back and sides. I have never finished a guitar with this wood type, I will use nitro. I read somewhere that pore filling is not necessary for granadillo, but if I look I can see quite a lot of open pore in it.

Is pore filling necessary with granadillo? What is a good pore filler for this wood to use with nitro? I have used water based fillers, but they are messy... I have also used pumice as the classical builders do... but it's slow... suggestions needed.

Thanks in advance!!

Thanks. I see many people uses epoxy nowadays. Isn't that very messy?

All fillers are messy. I always put on a pair of gloves working with it.

I made an Irish bouzouki with granadillo back and sides, bit I didn't pore fill. I don't really notice the pores, bit I'm also a fan of more of a raw look/feel to the wood. It's all up to preference.

I used shellac for the finish btw.

Hope that helps.

I have found epoxy (z-poxy finishing resin) straightforward to work with, following some rules. First, can't be too organized and neat. USE disposable gloves, changed as often as needed to honor the first rule. Don't leave shiny spots or drips or runs anywhere on the wood. Squeegee off as much as you can on every application. Let any application set overnight before sanding. Block sand everything, no freehand hand sanding. There's lots more to consider, practice will cause you to make up your own set of do's and donts.
