Control on face of Billy Strings' acoustic guitar?
I got curious noticing this on his Austin City Limits performance the other night but haven't found a thing in searches that addressed it. A decent photo here..

Well, I’m not afraid to stick my neck out and suggest the obvious - a volume control?

I looked on his web site, there's some pictures where you
can see the knob, but they're not better than the picture posted to this thread. I watched a youtube a year or so ago where an interviewer was asking Billy Strings questions about his equipment. He had gaffer's tape holding some wire across the front of his guitar on the lower bout... maybe he was figuring out how he wanted it at that time, and now it is installed? -Mike |

That actually looks like a Les Paul 3-way toggle switch. Possibly doing the same thing with a K&K (or similar) under the bridge and the magnetic soundhole pickup - pickup switching.

As others have noted, this seems like a quick way for Billy to go from the K&K to K&K & Magnetic to just the Magnetic. He uses a ton of effects so it make sense. Wouldn't be my first choice, but I am sure he sees this as a gigging guitar and would rather have convenience over looks.

I noticed that on the ACL show, too. It looked like a toggle switch to me, not a control pot.
If you're at that level of performance there's not a lot of need to adjust volume, but I could see where a switch to simply kill the output could be useful. It could also be used to easily choose between two levels so the volume could be boosted for solos. BS is known for those burning solos, so it might be used for that, especially if he likes to shake up his placement of doing solos which he seems to do. Otherwise it takes one or two really attentive sound techs to boost his solos whenever he decides to throw them in. I'd opt for that, since his performances lend themselves to the "loose cannon" style of performance. The multi-choice pickup selector is a very good possibility, too. When I first glanced at the thread title, I thought it was about Billy Strings trying to get his "guitar face" under control! Then I saw it was in the Amplification forum and was equipment related.

Thanks all. That picture is much better.

I don't know if it's a 2 way or 3 way switch, but it's to switch between his K&K, or whatever he uses and the soundhole pickup. I was watching a live post a week or so ago, and he flicked the switch and played a distorted solo.

I'm pretty sure the switch engages the pickup that feeds his "electric" rig. He uses several electric guitar pedals when they go into those spaced-out jams.

It’s a Banjotron. He’s beta testing it. Doesn’t like the sound yet by the looks of his face.
