Default Open Mic Night Redemption!

I played at an open mic last night where I had a crappy performance a couple months ago. (Here are the details from last time.) It went MUCH better this time! There were a lot more folks there last night and it was a really supportive atmosphere. I planned on three songs but then was asked to play another so I'm glad I prepared for that. Two of the songs had some picked melody lines in them so they were the hardest songs I've played at an open mic night yet. Though I was nervous, my wife thought I looked far more relaxed and she thought it showed in my performance. I wasn't perfect but I pushed the envelope a bit (for me), enjoyed it, learned a few things, and got a good experience under my belt.

Overall, a REALLY fun night!

Good job Red, Always get back on that horse.

I found that the only was to get past nerves was to a) prepare, prepare, prepare and b) accept that I don't give a hoot if I'm good of if 'they' hate me.

From this state of mind I could dig deep and take chances that usually paid dividends. (not ALWAYS! ) Laugh off your miscues, it loosens the audience and makes them like you more.

Keep up the fight!

Chris

Man, doesn't it feel GREAT when that happens? Don't stop now, keep on going. Do it again! And it's always good to have an extra tune (or three) ready to go just in case. Congratulations on your success!

Yeah....I had my worst open mic in a very long time last night. I'm looking forward to my chances at redemption. I've already picked my comeback song. Think i'm going to do Jim Chroce's "Time in a Bottle". The guitar work in that song is beautiful.

That horse just keeps riding easier each time huh?

The thing that bothers most people when starting out is not the fear of playing music to people, but just standing up in front of people being the spotlight. I've seen people almost faint when just trying to talk about something they know about, in front of a large group of people.

But the more you do it, the easier it is.

Thanks for the encouragement folks!

I forgot to mention one other interesting thing. When the first few performers were playing, folks mainly paid attention but it is a bar so there were a few side conversations going on. I was about halfway through my first song when I noticed that it got really quiet and all eyes were on me. That made me feel good.

If you can, post that. Our duo does it with mandolin. Love to hear your take.

I forgot to have someone record it, so I made a quick recording in my kitchen for you. https://youtu.be/UVlcpr59puM

Congrats on your success! It only gets easier from here.

If you're ever in the San Francisco Bay Area, come and join us on a Thursday night at "Auri's Open Mic" in Half Moon Bay, CA. 3 songs or 15 minutes, whichever comes first. Great folks, great food, great FUN! Check us out on FB.

The O/M is held at Cameron's Pub & Inn in Half Moon Bay. We have a dedicated stage, super sound system, and a virtuoso guitar player for our host. He can play every style of music and is happy to join in with anyone if THEY so desire.

Here's some pics:
