I tried it once about 40 years ago on the recommendation of a friend who did it regularly. Didn’t make enough of a difference, even short term, and I could change a set of strings quicker than I could boil them and wipe them dry and restring them.

I’ve done it. I’m thinking that we were all pretty broke back then.

My chemistry was antithetical to metal when I was younger—the bridge on my old strat is rusty. Plating on tuning machines turned bleh. Strings died near me.

This changed in my 40s. So strings last longer. Or maybe the places I play now are less toxic?
