Not Tonedexter training, but here is an excellent video on mic positioning from Neumann Academy. (The whole series is worth watching, better with nice headphones!)

An acoustic guitar is not a single point source, at least not for purposes of recording. Record one from the "12th fret position", record it again from the "lower bout position" and record it again from the "over the shoulder position". Playback and compare those three recordings. They are quite different.

The Tonedexter can only hear the guitar from one position (unless you send it more than one simultaneous source - which can be done). Accordingly, wavesmaps generated will be influenced by the mic position.

Microphone position matters, except when it doesn't.

One thing I am not quite clear on. Does wave mapping require studio quality recording to get the best wave map? When I say studio quality I am referring to getting the best possible mic and mic placement to generate a wave file that produces the best result.

If the answer to that question is yes, then what would happen if you ran a mixer with multiple mics positioned in different locations (as you might do with a recording), pan them all left and then send the left XLR out to the tone dexter?

Done it, interesting project, minimal benefit, at least not as much as good single mic positioning.

Not worth the effort for me but your experience may differ.

No, not in the general sense of studio quality recording.

In fact, you can use measurement microphones such as Behringer and Dayton Audio supply. Measurement mics are not meant for audio recording, but they apparently can result in a great wavemap (I've got to dig out my old Behringer).
