An interesting question, for me, as it causes me to realize I only really judge my completed guitars on their efficacy as a music tool.

My build quality is pretty consistent where it counts, and the occasional less than perfect purfling miter is not a deal killer for me.

Aesthetics are in the eye of the beholder, as they sort of say. A lot of what looks great to me is the cut and quality of the materials from a technical point of view. For those who share my values, my instruments will typically rate very high, while for others they may appear austere. I do enjoy experimenting with unusual wood choices, but none of my more recent instruments are that. Certainly this Koa instrument is conservative by most standards.

What I mean by my high rating of this guitar is that it sounds and plays fantastic to me, fully resonant yet amazingly balanced and controlled with extraordinary volume. Many of my guitars take a few days to relax into their sweet spot, this one was stunning from its first note. What else is there that counts?

What else?

1) Fit and comfort (though you might say "playing fantastic" takes care of that).
2) Appearance certainly counts highly among many buyers. My position is that all are possible and can be achieved by a very good builder. Example: the Koa one.
3) And don't forget structural integrity. If a great guitar folds up or begins cracking prematurely, then it's not a great guitar.

I take your 1, 2, and 3 for granted.

You can - but not every other builder can say that.

Perhaps I need to point out that we are in my blog thread discussing my opinion of my own individual guitars and only in comparison to each other? (Said with love and humor)

I have found that it is a Very Bad Idea to discuss my critique of other builder’s work in public or private. I learned this the hard way.

Smile Yep...

Too true! Discussion of others leads to a big mess of hurt.

Bruce, your work rocks!

These latest guitars are sure beautiful...

Cheers

Paul

I have started a new guitar and a new thread. The guitar is to be yet another Martinesque OM28 in European spruce and Brazilian rosewood. The thread is HERE.
