Default So, Riddle Me This...

So, I stayed down in Orlando the last last week at a nice, new hotel which was swinging way above its' price point.

Anyway, I noticed something odd. Now, I've stayed in thousands of hotels on six continents over the years, and I've never seen this.

Not once.

In the bathroom was, apparently, a bluetooth enabled mirror:

Some have suggested it was for controlling different light schemes on the back-lit mirror. Others have suggested the mirror might have a speaker so one could play their music through it. I saw no evidence that either was the case.

I turned the mirror's bluetooth on, and it wasn't discoverable by my phone (iPhone 12 Pro Max).]

Why would I need a bluetooth enabled mirror in a hotel bathroom???

Most likely simply dimmable but might have had some other options too:

Huh. That's the brand hotel I stayed at, too.

Odd, though, that it wouldn't pair with my phone...

Mirror Mirror on the wall...who is the fairest of them all...

Did you try that? It just might answer!

Some Bluetooth devices will only pair in app. The popular Square readers are an example. There are commercial products that way. In addition to Square readers, we (my work) have devices for order picking and retail technology that work that way.

This is blessing and curse. It can ease device management and control tampering. People who don't follow directions or posses middle school reading skills will think items are broken. Some more get weird ideas on the privacy topic.

By coincidence, I just sent software updates to a bunch of iPads and iPhones to see if that's why the past week or so has had some issues with these sorts of devices but I suspect human behavior is root cause.

A Bluetooth symbol on a mirror, eh?

It's just a reflection of the times we live in.
