Ouch, my old hands don't want to do that
After playing in DADGAD and lower tunings for a couple/few years there's a few of Tommy Emmanuel's tunes I want to learn.
I was working on them last night (in standard tuning) and my hand is like "you want me to do what?" I think after a couple of weeks to a month the hand will be able to handle it, but right now I feel like a beginner again

Yup, been there! It gets really fun when you play that "problem" chord and something in your arm pops. Make sure you stretch your hands and forarms before you play. Injurys suck.

Sometimes with age comes wisdom and reduced dexterity. FWIW I'm constantly amazed at Tommy Emmanuel and Rick Beato. I'm not even going gray yet and watching them makes me want to give up playing altogether.

Maybe try using the (shorter scale) J45.

Sometimes you can give up a note or two to change the difficulty of a chord grip. My teacher tells me middle (fill) notes first, bass notes second, and always keep the melody note(s).

I am,
I'm going to have to do a few weeks of chord drills, like in the bad old days

I'm struggling with the use of the pinky if used on the G chord or used for melody. It's a battle that I'm trying to find the answer for including gripping pressure and posture. The main problem is putting the pinking down tends to pull the fingers on teh low E or A string down and muting strings.

are you open to swapping out to lighter strings for a short while? and/or downtuning a step?

I'm using my J-45 which has lights on it.

Can I ask what you mean by 'working on it'?
Tabs, music, online lesson, by ear? All of them? Anyway, 2 suggestions for you...... first, step back a bit, TE is a real stretch..... 2nd, if you read Tab/music, here are some intermediate (they say) fingerpicking arrangements to work on: https://www.halleonard.com/product/2...picking-guitar https://www.halleonard.com/product/7...ful-songs-ever If you don't want a 100!: https://www.halleonard.com/product/6...cking-acoustic I prefer the books on a music stand, but they do say they do a digital edition...
