Study With Adam
Has anyone used this site to learn fingerpicking? Just signed up for a 14 day trail yesterday and would love to others experience with Adam.

I did a basic five day course online with Adam centered on rhythm. I thought it was very good. I was tempted to sign up for his ‘Study with Adam’ course, but at the time was too distracted to give it my full attention. I’ll be interested to hear what other comments follow.

I assume that's Adam Rafferty... Study With Adam. I think Adam is a terrific guitarist and he's a good guy. He was very popular at the Swannanoa Gathering. Maybe the best performer I ever saw there... he could just bring down the house!
I have not used this site, but he's very good. I used one of his earlier sites and it was also good. Hard for me to imagine that you wouldn't learn. Please let us know what you think. |

Yes, Adam Rafferty. Should have clarified that. I had a hiccup using PayPal and he replied almost immediately on a Sunday afternoon and took care of the problem.

I have a really good FaceTime teacher that I take a lesson from every two weeks. I signed up last night for the Standard Plan from Study with Adam as I think the material there could supplement what my teacher and I work on. Today I received a personalized video from Adam welcoming me to his program. Impressive. I really look forward to exploring the website and finding the lessons and songs that can further my fingerstyle journey.

Not quite a zombie thread so I think I will ask my questions here. Before the questions one thing I will mention as a concern is that Adam is a bit smoother than the artists I aim to emulate. I very much wish to play stuff like Mississippi John Hurt, Mance Lipscomb et al. I think reeve21 and srick are both where I hope to be someday. So I’m a little worried about Adam’s choices in repertoire. He sure is good though and I’m still searching for the right teacher with an actual path in mind.
Anyway on to my questions. Are the various levels available to pay monthly, or do you have to pay for a year up front? Adam mentions somewhere in his introductory material that you can pick your own songs to work on. How does that work? I’m really intrigued by his discussion about using a djimbe to work on groove. Is that a separate course? He offers a fourteen day free trial so I suppose I would have nothing to lose to try it but I’m also skeptical about how much you can get a sense of his program in two weeks.

I stuck with the course for three months and then ended it. IMO, the lessons were repetitive and as mentioned, the repertoire was limited. Don't get me wrong - it was a good course, but not something that I could really justify continuing to pay for.
And the trial is well worth it, as is a month or two of his lessons. But overall I have gotten more value from Toby Walker's lessons and from Truefire. Rick PS - I paid month to month.

I wound up canceling before the trail was over. The material was over my head and in the end not really what I wanted to play.

For those interested in getting a feel for Adam Rafferty's teaching style (both those participating in this thread and those just reading it), he has a pretty decent fingerstyle course on udemy.com. Though the listed price is $119.99, they often have sales that can get you the course for around $10.
https://www.udemy.com/course/fingers...otal-beginner/ One thing that Adam really emphasizes in his fingerstyle arrangements is getting a rhythmic flow that brings the arrangement to life. Personally, I prefer a more relaxed style, but I would think that for many listeners, having a solid, catchy rhythm would really perk up their ears. Tony
