Yes I'll admit it's a very crude setup, but when I got to the mixing stage, the results were great. I was able to bury the vocals or bring them right out in front. That was the goal, and it worked. I'm getting a nice vocal on top of a stereo guitar. I've two Neumann mics TLM 102's and a Shure SM7b, I can't complain about that.

The only problem I have now is to make room for this setup to sit permanently in my living room. I'm thinking about trading my love seat for a single stuffed chair. That would open up enough space for the recording rig.

Years ago people used to squawk about sound engineers putting pillows in the bass drum. Now it's common place. Today, many people are using cheap Chinese mics, now that's crude.

Here's vocal test track with just the SM7b mic pumped up with the CloudLifter CL-1.

Pay attention to what you don't hear. No room noise, no reflections...just pure vocals,

Here's a pic of the rig with the moving blanket, CL-1, and new mic stand...it's just about completed, I'm waiting on an short XLR cable to go from the CL-1 to the SM7b, should be here by Tuesday.

That's quite a contraption.

Yes it is and it was expensive too...I've got about $1,600-1,700 hundred bucks in it. The biggest expense being the microphones. Without mics it cost about me about $80-100 bucks to build, because I bought some of the stuff used on eBay. The great benefit of it is, I can step up to it, and in a matter of minutes have a quality recording made, and I can do this all day long. I can bring in another artist and record them hassle free. I can easily change mics to suite my needs. This rig will last for years. The test recordings I've posted are just the tip of the iceberg, the sound quality is much better in my studio. I'm very happy with the great sound of the mics I bought. Yes you can use cheaper mics and still get a great sound, but I wanted the real deal mics. So I consider this experiment a great success. So what's the alternative ?? Book studio time at $130 bucks an hour ?? You'll burn thru $1,600 bucks in no time.

Congrats. The main thing is that you like the sound you are getting. For recording the guitar I have tried similar things with blankets, etc. in the past but switched to using absorbing panels on the walls and ceiling,

http://www.atsacoustics.com/item--AT...EN01&kw=1274-F

but that is not practical or affordable for everyone. Most microphones do a good job if positioned just so.

Keep having fun.

Thanks for the encouragement, it's guys like you that made me decide to build a private studio, so I don't have to deal with your type.

At $61.95 for a small piece of foam is fine if you have a million dollar budget to work with. I don't. Now that I've worked with decent microphones, there's no going back.

Who is selling a small piece of foam form $61.95?

My link showed a two foot by three foot by four inch thick framed and backed Owens Corning 703 rigid fiberglass board which can be used free standing or mountable on walls and ceiling.
Personally I use fourteen panels, three by four feet by four inches thick on the walls, and three by four feet by two inches thick on the ceiling - at a total cost less than just one of my microphones.
If physically possible in one's recording space it is a good thing to go with.

Just curious, What does it cost to book a professional recording studio now days ?? The last I heard was $130 bucks an hour with a 4 hour minimum, plus tape costs,, but that was many years ago.

If you really don't want to deal with other people's opinions, maybe posting several times a day on a public forum isn't the best strategy.

At this time this thread has had 3,575 views. Apparently there's a lot of people who are gaining knowledge of various equipment that I'm using. I gain information from other people's threads as well. This is a very good exercise for me, excellent practice time in using mics and their placement.
